Earl Boebert Dec 30, 2013 8:58 PM

I flew that flight in 1961. Nonstop or one stop depending on the wind. Mine was one stop both ways. That pure jet 707 was the most underpowered aircraft the regulators ever certified. We crossed the perimeter fence at LAX with what looked like two feet to spare and 15 miles out I looked out the window and guessed we were at 5000 feet. Service was superb; as a college kid from a poor background I had never experienced anything like it.

18 months later I was banging around in the back of a T29 courtesy of Curtis LeMay's Air Force :-)

Cheers,

Earl

Eagle Rock Sub Station

I know we have talked about the Eagle Rock Substation before at 7888 N. Figueroa Ave. in Eagle Rock. Here are a few pictures I took on a tech scout for a tv series. And no, I cannot say what series, the non-disclosure agreement I signed prevents me from saying. All three photos by Mr.Swink

More than the reflected building, I noticed the sign for the business at left - the San Pedro Loan & Jewelry Co., which we discussed mostly back on page 692 after the 1979 photo you posted:

Unfortunately that building (once at 205 W. 6th, now gone) doesn't look like anything close to the same building. The 1979 move was probably not its first.

I also didn't spot anything with the window pattern of the reflected building along modern 6th or 7th Streets.

The grand opening, perhaps? I notice on one picture the front of the building has two overhead lights, and just one in the other photo. Maybe the guy on the ladder was still installing those on opening day.

San Pedro Bay Historical Society lists the Silver Lion Café at 507 S. Harbor Blvd. from the 1930s to 1950s. They also list the Golden Lion Café at 507 Front in the 1920s. The Water and Power site has a 1900 picture of Front Street and says it became Avalon Boulevard, but that's in Wilmington and doesn't fit the image, so I think it's safe to say that Front became S. Harbor.

The picture below comes with the following caption:

"Harbor Blvd, San Pedro, California, after the Long Beach Earthquake, March 10, 1933. The businesses shown are the Army & Navy, Sullivan Bros Lockers, Sailors Steel Locker Club, Silver Lion Cafe, Harbor Hotel, Neal Tailor, Hotel Alexander, and several other unidentified businesses including a dentist, a drugstore, and cafes."

I can't see the Silver Lion Cafe, but it's meant to be in there somewhere. That means it's also likely to be in this 1938 picture I found on www.railwaypreservation.com. They also have a picture of Front Street, and say it became S. Harbor Boulevard.

Finally, the building reflected in the window of the Silver Lion Cafe is the San Pedro Pacific Electric Station. The picture below supposedly dates from the 1950s.

This was during WW II and many folks had chickens in the backyard.... for food. My brother and I lived on a LA ranch in the SF Valley and we had rabbits and chickens during WW II.

I still have the WW II Ration Books that my mother filled in for us. As a child, I could get a quart of milk, once a week. Shoes? They were very much in short supply. One pair in maybe 6 months or more. All leather was needed for military boots.

Even seed for chickens was rationed and that's what we see here. In the picture we see hog and pig food. Much of LA was farm land in those days.

That might be a box of baby chicks on the table, and behind the legs of the fellow on the far left. They usually had to be picked up when they arrived.

I had mentioned earlier this month and subsequent posts showed that poinsettia fields once dotted the areas around West Hollywood and Beverly Hills. This youtube link, 1940's, right near the beginning, shows a large poinsettia field off Sunset, though the exact location isn't specified. Later on, one of the houses has a poinsettia plant in the picture. There's brief glimpses of Hollywood (the Blvd. at night at Christmas) and environs in this, what I suspect was some kind of travel film, including a bit of The Carthay Circle Theater in color. (All the film is in color, though it isn't the best quality.)

Poinsettias trapped in the sterile plaza of mid-century Civic/Music Center.
