OK, RNRA - I will happily trade the outdoor amphitheater for the pedestrian bridge that you killed.

Anyone care to bet on how many timeline extensions this temporary casino location is going to get? I'm going to say it will operate here for at least 10 years, if not unofficially forever. |
might as well keep it there as a secondary casino. Hasn't that building been vacant for decades now?

If anything, maybe it will draw enough attention to get someone to invest into the building after the main casino is finished. I think it's kinda cool that's the temporary location though. Looking forward to visiting while they are building the main casino.

I would be more than fine keeping it open indefinitely. It's got excellent proximity to Michigan Ave and multiple hotels, and a massive parking structure across the street that will make access for suburbanites and out of town drivers easier. Once the main casino is built, they can have a 24 hour shuttle service going back and forth between the two in order to easily grab tourists. This will also have the added benefit of keeping the casino busses off Michigan Ave; if there's no mini Medinah Temple casino, Bally's would probably push for a Michigan Ave drop off/pick up point for the main casino location.

Bally's is presenting at this month's Committee on Design. Things of note in their presentation:
- Pedestrian bridge is gone - The city still has plans for an ambiguous transit center - Bally's hotel will be 500 feet tall - On slides 17-19, we see massings of the River District + NOMA + Onni's plans for 700 W Chicago! Based on scaling, Onni's proposed development looks to be ~600 feet for most of the buildings. River West is shaping to be an extremely dense part of the city over the next decade PDF: https://www.chicago.gov/content/dam/...draft_0912.pdf |
Wow - Thanks for posting that.....
The more details I see of this development, the more I fall in love with it. Super happy the city chose this. The attention to detail on the riverwalk (so far at least) looks amazing. Those massing renders make this project look even grander. On the transit side, I'm pretty happy too. Yeah, it's going to suck for people driving into the area, but the Grand Ave Blue Line stop really is pretty damn close. Not sure what the "transit center" in the details would be here..... A simple bus stop? |
Sucks about the pedestrian bridge. Complete failure of leadership.
The rest of the proposal is fine, I guess. A lot depends on whether the neighborhood fills in with towers around it, or if this ends up as a weird unfinished multi-level complex. Illinois Center and Cityfront Center still have multiple vacant lots after 40 years. At least the public spaces around Bally's are extensive, but they still feel like an afterthought - they are talking up the porte-cochere area as a signature plaza, but they want to have the west side dominated by a blank parking garage. Slide 40 looks like the Design Committee asked them to look into doing liner hotel units, and they are saying it's too hard. Quote:
The location of the station is odd though - I think CTA would rather have it closer to the Chicago/Halsted intersection to allow transfers, rather than in the middle of the development. I guess there's no reason they can't do both, but it's not really rapid transit if it's stopping every 2 blocks. |
The pedestrian bridge part being gone is a joke. fuck nimbys
still think the 78 proposal was by far the best and only world class one, but this was my second choice. looks decent. Wonder what kind of transit they plan on adding here. |
the Riverwalk aspect is really looking like a huge civic benefit

bridge seems like an unnecessary ask
I do notice a low slung hulking mass of a building with few design details on the non-river side frontage. Is that going to be a blank wall? |

From the floorplan it looks like there will be some eating/drinking spaces along that side, but accessed from the casino, not the street. There might be windows, but very few doors. |
How come there is hardly any planning for bike lanes at the site? No bike lanes at the river and only a typical green paint lane with no barriers or seperation for the rest of the site. Horrible and shame on city for not making this into an issue
