Exciting stuff going on in Hyde Park with Solstice, the hotel starting soon, and the other residential project hopefully starting sometime this year or soon afterwards. Then, of course Obama Center!

I've stayed at the Study Hotel property in New Haven. Nice vibe. I'm not sure, but that one looked like it may have been a conversion rather than a new build.

That location is perfect for Yale, you can walk to the center of campus in 5 minutes. 53rd street is just far enough away from campus to make it a bit of a hike, so not quite so convenient for those visiting campus.

It's literally a 12-15 minute walk from where this proposed hotel is located to the Regenstein Library, not to mention less time if you just need to get to the area where the new North Campus dorms are located on 55th street..please tell me you don't actually believe such time is inconvenient :uhh:

Oh shit, this is a different hotel. The one on 53rd is being developed by The Olympia Companies/SMART Hotels, who also did the Harper Court Hyatt Place. This has to be for the old Hyde Park Day School site:

U. of C. Considering Replacing Old Hyde Park Day School With Hotel
Sam Cholke - May 27, 2016 8:11am - DNAInfo Chicago

At a Tuesday night meeting called by Ald. Willie Cochran (20th) to update the community on construction projects on and near the university’s campus, university officials said they are considering replacing the former Hyde Park Day School with a hotel.
Will Towns, assistant vice president for neighborhood initiatives in the Office of Civic Engagement at the university, said he would discuss plans for a hotel at 60th Street and Dorchester Avenue at the start of the meeting — and then never said another word about it.
...
University officials after the meeting said there were plans in the works to see if a hotel would be interested in the former Hyde Park Day School building to serve the nearby academic conference center the university is currently planning.
....
If a hotel is interested in the former school buildings, they would likely be demolished, according to university planners familiar with the hotel discussions.

Not into this. Why demolish the charming school building when there's vacant lots literally on the same block of Dorchester, on either side of the street just south of it?

UChicagoLand Mar 3, 2017 11:48 PM

That will be real close to the Obama Center and The Rube (Rubenstein Forum).

Only by way of comparison. At Yale you literally (pun intended) turn the corner and you're in the heart of campus.

Been meaning to get photos of this! Passed it by a few times recently and was curious. Is this transitioning to a steel frame? I thought that was the case, until I saw the rebar in-place for a few vertical columns in the photo below. In my limited experience, it seems odd that the concrete core would so quickly outpace the columns & floor plates.

There's a loader on the boutique hotel site and they've begun taking down the fence and clearing out the building. I guess as soon as they get a demo permit issued the show will really start.
