High Level Bridge redevelopment idea

Anyone see the May 2010 of Edmontonians? On page 7 is an article proposing an idea of developing a new bridge along the High Level Bridge and having both include a lot of mixed-use development that connects Garneau with downtown.

Looks neat and all, but it is designated as a municipal historic resource and as such cannot be altered to significantly change the appearance

like the idea of retail/condos/hotel on 109st leading up to it, but DO NOT TOUCH MY BRIDGE

There is no possible way to improve this bridge apart from increasing its use as a transportation corridor!

lighting? i wouldnt mind that

i would like to see year round trolleys and perhaps bike lanes moved to the top. It is down right scary being either a rider or walker.

Lighting...fair enough. Not really changing the essence of the bridge though. Still transportation. Still wicked awesome radmobile.

I'd rather the character of Hlb be left and maybe another bridge added next to it so that one can easily go northbound instead of going all the way over to Walterdale and Queen Elizabeth. Would double up for the LRT low floor also as it's supposed to go past the Legislature down 109th, and then I'd assume down Whyte to Sherwood pk.

How about something like this for a lighting job?

just read this article in the Edmontonian a few days ago, and i like the idea, but like EE said, build a bridge next to the High Level and do it.

Effing with High Level is almost sacrilegious, IMHO... While it may not be flashy like the Golden Gate or even the Lion's Gate bridge, it does retain a quiet sense of dignity and grandeur that perfectly sums up Edmonton. With all the demands that are expected upon it in the future, I say they should think about adding several vertical levels to the top of the bridge before anything else... If it's at all possible...

If not, rebuild the bridge in a similar style... Let 105th be entirely new and distinct... That's where I'd love to see a Santiago Calatrava-style suspension bridge go up...

Coldrsx May 9, 2010 9:25 PM

^don't touch it but add to it or rebuild it?

Uh?

canucklehead2 May 9, 2010 10:20 PM

What I'm saying is that I'd much rather see it retained in its current form as much as possible. If the bridge can accommodate LRT, HSR and car traffic in its current form or maybe with addition of a 3rd layer of use on top, great! Leave it the eff alone... But if it can't don't build something wildly different that what already exists... i.e. that bizarre rendering in Edmontonian's... To me the existing bridge is quintessentially Edmonton and iconic.

Leave the High Level as is. Add some lighting similar to Eiffel Tower.

Replace the 5th st bridge with something grand. There was a plan presented a number of years back that had residential above a road.

Coldrsx May 10, 2010 3:42 PM

^I think I am one of the minority who hope we do not get a 'grand' 105st replacement. I think it would hurt the chances of making that area a community and an area that is more inviting and livable.

Yes we need to sort out the end of gateway, yes we need another lane or 2 north, but i hope we see the light in keeping that area at a human scale.

There are numerous ways of keeping the area friendly as well as developing a grand river crossing. Watching Calgary’s design competitions for new crossings shows there are some great ideas.

Neat, what was the reason for scrapping that?

Coldrsx Sep 19, 2020 1:32 AM

No streetcar.
