Capitol Milling
Some excellent info and pix re Capitol Milling may be found here:
http://lariverrailroads.com/capitol_mills.html Pacific Coast Architecture Database (PCAD) adds this: "Alteration Note: In 1898, Morgan and Walls added a third story to the rear wing of the Capitol Milling Company Building and and added a fifth story to the main building." https://digital.lib.washington.edu/a...ructures/3475/ |

In fact the IMDB picture for that episode has Gibbs (Mark Harmon) standing there on the north side of the building. (Where the police car is on the GSV pic.) IMDB doesn't seem to like hotlinking so open this image link in a new window. Or visit this page on IMDB for more photos. |

Pretty cool that Capitol Milling has its own Gold Line station now, even if the train no longer runs through the building :-) |

Los Angeles Armed Forces Induction Center
Some amongst us can be counted on as old enough to be eligible for the military draft during the Vietnam War (oh I’m sorry…that wasn’t a war was it?) and I’m most certainly included in that group and who may have seen their life changed in a dramatic way at the old Armed Forces Induction Center at 1033 south Broadway. I remember going there for a classification physical and then visiting the Air Force recruiter in the same building and hearing the news that John Kennedy had been killed. So that was a double whammy day I won’t ever forget for two big reasons. Anyway as near as I can tell the building may still be there although it looks better now than what I remember from that day 50 years ago. I don’t recall seeing anything on the forum during my two times reviewing of the first 630 pages. Any recollections or stories???

Found $2,000 in quarters -- turns it over to police, 1954 9 June 1954. Lowell Kampmann; Police Sergeant Robert Maier: Lowell Kampmann found $2,000.00 in quarters in the street, turned it into Central Police Station." I wonder how much two thousand dollars in quarters weighs. USC digital archive/Los Angeles Examiner Collection, 1920-1961 |

After I got out of high school I worked for the BofA central cash vault at 11th and Figueroa, 1959 to 1962 (Staples Center is now across the street). Anyway, we processed large customer cash accounts including millions of dollars in bills and tons of coins. I kind of remember a bag of quarters of $1000 being about 50 to 55 lbs. I worked in the area where we shorted mixed coins by size (and I learned to collect coins in the process by scanning the mixed coins looking for old ones) and when the bags reached the proper amount (counted by number of units so $1000 quarters would be every 4000 units) we changed the bag, put a strap lock on and placed in the pile ready to be inventoried. |

So the building outlined in red is the 1924 Department of Water and Power building? http://imageshack.us/a/img11/4717/aa...eatromaine.jpg gsv I love this building. http://imageshack.us/a/img32/9485/aa...atromaine1.jpg gsv But the more I look at the vintage photograph, something doesn't seem right. The 'Ben-Hur' building seems to be a bit further south, perhaps at Barton Ave. or the alley between Romaine and Barton. (see below) for example: Here is the view from the northeast corner of Barton & Vine. http://imageshack.us/a/img835/6197/a...atbartonav.jpg gsv __ |
OK, after fixating on this... i see that I am w r o n g.
below: This building (outlined in red) is the Dept. of Water and Power building, not the other one. http://imageshack.us/a/img824/5687/b...937vcbuckl.jpg and this is the view from the northeast corner of romaine and vine. GaylordWilshire was correct. http://imageshack.us/a/img402/3097/aabbenhurg1.jpg gsv So what was the building that stood directly to the north of the Dept. of Water & Power building? (it appears to have had smokestacks) __ |

The California Laundry--whose sign you see in ER's initial picture--was just north of the Municipal Power and Light/DWP building. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-g...2520PM.bmp.jpgwaterandpower.org Above: From a little farther south. The Vine Street School is at left--the corner building appears to be new in the photo below. Most if not all of the school buildings in this shot appear to still be there, though heavily remodeled. (Was the small building on the corner moved back and turned 90 degrees?) https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-p...nestschool.jpgUSCDL In a shot over the roof of the corner Vine Street school addition--apparently taken from the roof of the DPW building--we can see what must be the backlot of Metro Pictures. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-B...lroofmetro.jpgUSCDL And now for the noir... http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/8...ingofdeath.jpgLAPL Per the LAPL caption: "Six year old, Larry Caster, fell to his death on the hard asphalt pavement from one of the swings shown, Vine Street Elementary School. Photo shows seats now removed and chains tied up. Photo dated: May 11, 1951." Were children never to swing again on Vine Street? |
