By sheer coincidence I'm back in the area of Crenshaw Blvd. and 54th Street.
metal tag -Frost & French http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...540/fXY1p7.jpg ebay Today, Adee Plumbing and Heating occupies 5457 Angeles Mesa Drive (now Crenshaw Blvd.) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/673/xQXvSZ.jpg GSV -it has two excellent vintage signs (I especially like the shape of one on the right / perhaps it's a remnant left over from the Frost & French era) Adee's website says they have been serving Southern California since 1949. http://www.adeedo.com/ Executive Offices: 5457 Crenshaw, Los Angeles __ |
We've seen this view before, but perhaps not this particular photograph...and not this good of a scan.
It has an excellent view of the Bradbury Building (middle right background) and beyond that, the cyclorama/panorama rotunda* or whatever it was called. The Exchange Building (prominent white building) appears to be under construction. 1905 cabinet card. -found a few nights ago on ebay. (be sure to pan right--->) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/661/crIUNK.jpg __ *Here's a view of the panorama rotunda I mentioned above. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/538/d8yx88.jpg http://www.panoramaonview.org/panora...geofparis.html Third and Main? It looks more like Fourth and Main in the 1905 sepia photo I just posted. (If I remember correctly, we've seen a baist map showing the rotunda) -but i couldn't find it at the moment. __ |

:previous: You're correct HossC. I was thinking of the 1906 sanborn map.
It's interesting how it was situated in the center of the block. hmmm..I just noticed it says Panorama Skating Rink. I had forgotten about that. You'd think after five years of NLA someone would have found a photograph of the interior when it was a skating rink. __ |

Sadness on NLA thread.....

I agree ER. Five years is a long time. Why no interior photo? This is a disgrace to NLA and most embarrassing. Today is not like yesterday when you could count on people. What's the world coming to? She's sad about NLA and no skating rink photo. I feel the same way too. At least she's across the street from my favorite clothes store....Desmonds.! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ps6adcec53.jpg Anthony Hernandez.1971 c |
The 1905 sepia photo also gives us a rare glimpse of the flat that preceded the Independent Foresters Building.

Two Car PE Train vs Trucks and Autos

Alas not much additional information, but it appears to be your standard grade crossing incident with the box trailer rig being struck by the 2-car train and pushed into the path of the other vehicles when the lead PE car derailed. Earlier this evening I posted a cardboard advertisement for the Paris Inn.
Here's a wine list from 1935 with some rather risque illustrations. Robert Mitchum and the Evil Weed (Revisited)
We have chewed over Robert Mitchum's marijuana arrest a few times in the past, but I believe that this is a new photo (for us) AND a new excuse
by Mitchum. According to this article, Mitchum was house-hunting, with his real estate agent, and just dropped in to Lila Leeds' place to say hi (maybe more like high) and the poor innocents got swept up in a police raid. http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps7f14a6a1.jpg L.A. Times Sept. 1, 1948: Scene after police took four people into custody on charges of marijuana use. From left: policeman, actress Lila Leeds, real estate agent Robin Ford, actor Robert Mitchum and dancer Vickie Evans with her back to the camera. Robert Mitchum’s 1948 arrest on marijuana charges Posted By: Scott Harrison, Los Angeles Times "Actor Robert Mitchum’s 1948 arrest on charges of marijuana use unleashed six months of intense media coverage of the Hollywood bad boy. The above photo gallery is a sample of the coverage by Los Angeles Times photographers. A Sep. 1, 2006, short article the Los Angeles Times reported: Sept. 1, 1948: Actor Robert Mitchum and starlet Lila Leeds were reportedly caught smoking marijuana during a police raid at the actress’ Hollywood Hills home. Two others were also arrested. Mitchum told police that he and another friend were in the neighborhood looking to buy a house when they stopped to visit Leeds and her roommate, dancer Vickie Evans. The actor said he had trouble finding the home on Ridpath Drive, which one narcotics agent described as “ideally situated to be a ‘reefer resort.’ It is perched on a hillside, with no near neighbors, and well-screened by shrubbery,” The Times reported. Mitchum said: “The girls let us in and five minutes later Vickie went to answer the door and the police entered.” Following his arrest, the actor “was by turns as full of remorse as one would expect from a top-bracket star,” the newspaper said. “At other times he was full of philosophy as one might expect from an up-from-the-ranks player who once said he arrived in California by bus with his wife and only $26.” Mitchum, 31, said at the time that the scandal was the “bitter end” of his film career. But the actor, who ended up serving a 60-day sentence, continued to make movies for years, up until his death in 1997. Real estate agent Robin Ford was arrested with Mitchum, Leeds and Evans. He was convicted and served a 60-day sentence. Evans was cleared of all charges by a jury. Actress Lila Leeds’ career was ruined by the arrest. She died in 1999." Sage Observation: Out of the four, only Vickie Evans seems to have gotten off scot free here. From my "limited" experience in this area, I would have bet that a woman arrested with a pumpkin over her head had to be guilty of something. |

Here's something a little different - a "then and now" (it's actually a "now and then") from slightly different locations. Yesterday, e_r posted a "vintage pocket mirror with advertisement" from a men's furnishings company called Wilhoite-Evans & Cohn, Inc. A quick search of the City Directories shows that they were at varying addresses between 941 and 945 S Los Angeles Street in the 1920s and 1930s. While checking out the address for vintage photos (none found yet), I visited the 900 block of S Los Angeles Street with the Googlemobile. Outside the current building, I found this Sparkletts vehicle.
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...lettsTruck.jpg GSV It reminded me of the 1931 image below which I originally posted in a "then and now" of the 200 block of South Los Angeles Street. The full post can be seen here. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...Sparkletts.jpg Detail of picture in USC Digital Library I guess this is what 83 years of progress looks like :). |
