No, its the gallery place that closed abruptly about a year ago. Just north of Matt's. It's a pretty big space. The plan is to make it look like Big Picture in Seattle.

I just watched a 10' tall wall of water rush down the dry salt river. It was 20' deep in 2 minutes. Crazy...

I was at a meeting with Mayor Gordon last month and he said, "I voted against [the demolition]." so there was a vote of some kind.

It was a preservation case lobbied through the developer's rezoning process. It's apropos on some level but generally the wrong arena to fight one in.

It was a zoning case. The developer was seeking to re-zone the property from C-3 to C-2 with a height waiver allowing a four story (56') office building. The developer already had a demolition permit and Gordon knew that the rezoning was going to be approved, which it was. His vote was a sop to the DVC.

So, I was driving back from South Mountain today on Central. I wanted to see how CityScape was looking since I haven't been downtown in awhile. While driving from downtown to midtown, I was talking with a friend about how I wish there was more of a link between downtown and midtown besides the lightrail. I thought it would be interesting if the sidewalks were enhanced with music or misters since it is not the most comfortable thing to walk in the heat during the summer; however, there are certainly parts of Central where the sidewalks couldn't be widened/extended.

Then, while looking at the lightrail, we wondered why there isn't some type of sky walkway built above the lightrail (or lightrail stations) that would extend all the way down Central from midtown to downtown, with points where people could exit it and be at street level. Perhaps they could have moving sidewalks on parts of them, somehow be cooled, have music, or even be lit up at night somewhat like the Freemont Street Experience in Vegas or some type of cool lighting. Plus, the views would be great.

I guess we were trying to come up with an idea of how to get more pedestrian traffic in midtown and downtown, and find a way to link the two better. I believe that if more people were walking through that area rather than just driving or riding the lightrail, they would be more prone to visiting some of the businesses along Central and downtown. Perhaps it could even draw more people to want to live in the area, or spur more development along that area.

City of Phoenix seeking developer for new biomedical building

The city of Phoenix is seeking a developer to build a new biomedical facility on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus.

City officials are expecting the project to be at least 100,000 square feet and four stories tall. It would be next to the existing 170,000-square-foot facility occupied by the Translational Genomics Research Institute.

That six-story TGen building is 100 percent occupied and cost about $50 million to develop, said Jeremy Legg, program manager for the city’s Community and Economic Development Department.

He said he has heard from numerous researchers and companies that are interested in leasing space next to TGen and the University of Arizona College of Medicine on that campus.

The developer who is selected for this project would be responsible for building the structure as well as financing and leasing it, he said. The project must include at least 40 percent laboratory space.

Proposals to be considered in the first review are due by noon Sept. 3.
