For one, fast and Union Pacific never occur in the same sentence, so this is already weird. UP and the Class 1 railroads have been going in the opposite direction for years with PSR, running longer and longer trains and damn the hazards, so a conceivable shift to shorter trains quickly bouncing between hubs is weirder still. UP focusing on smaller businesses that they've long neglected is also pretty weird.
I could only conceive of all of this if they rebuilt the Roll Industrial Lead/"Phoenix West" line that connects the Yuma area to Tonopah, which Amtrak needs anyways to resume Phoenix to LA service with their current plans. The rebuilding of that and the accordant reinvestment in Phoenix's dirt old rails would be incredible for the region. But they're not talking about any of this, so it's either a stay tuned for big news or they're going to offer a service that few people are really going to use imho. |

For reference, here is the original design from way back on Mar 2020.
What I do love about the previous design over the current design (besides the number of towers/overall height), is the long, linear view corridor/pathway that cut through the development and straight into the park. Pearce, whose well-known Valley family had operated Pearce Beverage Co. as a distributor for Coors beer for decades, recently sold 2.57 acres of land near the Arizona Diamondbacks' Chase Field in downtown Phoenix. The buyers had previously owned two properties on the south side of Lincoln Street that were purchased by Matt Ishbia, owner of the Phoenix Suns, said Jim Schaller, owner of Schaller Real Estate LLC. Mark V. Dye and Eric Steven Ansel were part of a group that sold a cluster of properties, including Lincoln Union at 425 E. Lincoln St., for $38.63 million, according to Tempe-based real estate database Vizzda LLC. The Suns ownership group is planning to turn the parcels into a new office headquarters and a state-of-the-art practice facility for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury. Dye and Ansel then paid $17.3 million in cash for the 2.57-acre parcel where Ansel had been operating a parking lot, Schaller said. "It was a situation where they teamed up and approached Art Pearce for a 1031 exchange," said Schaller, who negotiated the $17.3 million sale for the acreage near the northwest corner of Seventh and Lincoln streets. A 1031 exchange allows a property owner to avoid taxes on a property sale, provided they reinvest the proceeds into a replacement property. Public records on file with the city of Phoenix show a preliminary plan review to develop Pearce Apartments at 520 S. 5th St., Phoenix. But now that the property is owned by Dye and Ansel, it will continue to operate as a parking lot, Schaller said. "They'll let everything else grow up around it," he said. The Pearce family had owned the property at 520 S. 5th St. since the 1940s, he said. "It's an end of an era," he said. "They had a building on that property. They were the old Coors beer distributor back in the 1950s and 1960s. They owned the Lincoln Union building — the one the Phoenix Suns bought. That was built to be the Coors warehouse." |

So the 2nd Phase of X phoenix that is on Van Buren that is about topped out has stopped all construction activity.... but what about the X that recently began construction over on McKinley or 2nd Ave or where ever it is? Is that one also halted, or is that not associated with the on-going issues somehow? I can't really keep track.
