P. Loiseau set up a shooting gallery, raising $7.00 for the society. http://imageshack.us/a/img196/3682/jdu0.jpg http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a=d...--txt-IN------ In 1881 he offered his services as a 'sleight-of-hand' performer at Washington Gardens. (I surmise the 'shooting gallery' mentioned in the article is also P. Loiseau's) http://imageshack.us/a/img819/4/5hwa.jpg http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a=d...--txt-IN------ __ At the turn of the century shooting galleries seemed to be very popular in downtown Los Angeles. (a cluster was located in the N. Main Street area) I was surprised that many of the shooting galleries were located in basements. (as opposed to backyards with mounds of earth, or lower rent second floors) Here's an example: "under the U.S. Hotel" -dated 1881 http://imageshack.us/a/img541/1958/g9uz.jpg http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a=d...--txt-IN------ From the 'north main cluster'....a shooting gallery located quite near P. Loiseau's shooting gallery at 43 Main St. http://imageshack.us/a/img837/9882/st6o.jpg http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a=d...--txt-IN------ The shooting galleries were licensed (10 dollars a month), and gave away rather nice prizes. http://imageshack.us/a/img94/363/uigy.jpg |

The continuing search for Tally's? "Tally's" is directly below the left-most tower-parapet. Perhaps someone can identify the Hotel taking up most of the space in the drawing. Baist ('21) lists it as "Washington Bldg." Curiously, the drawing anecdotally resembles the Tally's Electric-Liberty-Glockner's located at 262 S. Main, located next door to Hotel Gray. Unfortunately, in the picture below, Tally's is out of the frame to the left. But it is close enough to afford a slight idea of the immediate area near what the "alleged" first purpose-built movie house in LA, CA or larger expanses. Hard to tell whether Main Street was paved, considering all of the dirt on the street. Third Street, to the right, looks even worse. Perhaps it was the rainy season - Fall or Winter since there are ads for a January 1 opening at the Burbank Theater (538 Main). On Third Street (right) next to the Gray would probably have been the Hotel George., As an aside, Urbanas asked about Tally's probable floor plan. The diagram above ^^^ may be for a later theater; however, it offers a good indication that the theater was narrow and probably canted as indicated by steps. It is unclear whether the screen was higher or lower than street level, but it is also clear from the diagram that the theater included a stage-proscenium and "scenery" of some kind. It is a guess that Tally's successors probably allowed for the possibility of live acts or a master of ceremonies to give away door prizes or make announcements. Circa 1905 - The Gray Hotel, on the northeast corner of Main and Third. http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/utils/...XT=&DMROTATE=0http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/utils/...XT=&DMROTATE=0 http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/utils/...XT=&DMROTATE=0http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/utils/...XT=&DMROTATE=0 http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/utils/...XT=&DMROTATE=0http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/utils/...XT=&DMROTATE=0 http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/utils/...XT=&DMROTATE=0http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/utils/...XT=&DMROTATE=0 http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/utils/...XT=&DMROTATE=0 http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/utils/...XT=&DMROTATE=0http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/utils/...XT=&DMROTATE=0 Small consolation, but it quite possible that the vent above the two story bricked building is - 262 S. http://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...BYGYT2IXGQ.jpghttp://catalog.library.ca.gov/exlibr...BYGYT2IXGQ.jpg Through the late 1950's small caliber arms and military surplus rifles were treated by many as sporting goods. Like other entertainment and sports-related businesses, I would guess shooting ranges went through phases of popularity, the same as miniature golf and bowling. Consider that in the 1870's there wasn't much to be heard or seen on radio, tv or the movies, sans make believe. Entertainment was probably where you found it. Because of the noise, unless the range is in a stand alone business that can be sound proofed, the basement would be the next best bet. Picture sand bags. I suppose it makes it easier for the proprietor to police the spent rounds for reuse too. I can't seem to locate it, but I am certain there are a couple of '50s B&W photos of downtown near Bunker Hill where there is a shooting range amidst the populace. I assumed it was in the basement. Beverly Hills had a rifle range too! Quote:

One for the gasometer fans, too. http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ps26a7adb3.jpg The obsessive compulsive key tosser. Another snazzy Nash and great background buildings. This is nitpicking but I imagine someone who tosses his keys as much as this guy is supposed to wouldn't need to stare at it like it's about to explode in his hand. http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ps8048f936.jpg And some more... It was hard to stop stopping the movie with so many great shots. Some of these I like for composition, others for the locations and people. The Eastside shoeshiner, the marbled and striped Stop sign, the woman in the "Open All Night" theater booth. And the view from this dude's house! Holy hell. I'd demolish that place purely out of jealousy! Dark Sky Films |

An unusual view of Downtown. It's clearly Hill Street looking north (note the two tunnels in the far distance), and counting streets down from 7th, this appears to have been taken from a vantage point at the NE corner of Hill and 10th. But what height-limit building used to stand there? There's nothing but a tacky strip mall on that site today. And the year? The cars (what few can be seen) look like mid-1920s. One clue to a more specific date: it looks like the Warner Bros. Theatre is in the last stages of construction here. Or maybe this shows it in the process of losing its two top floors. The building doesn't have that profile today. I must say, this isn't exactly a flattering image of Downtown. The city here looks downright dreary to me. |
:previous: When I first saw that view I wondered where the photographer was perched.
