I believe the matchbook may actually be from a Chicago lounge, not one in L.A....

ethereal_reality Mar 11, 2014 9:45 PM

:previous: That's possible. The seller listed it as Los Angeles. I'll have to check it out.

At least the Club Lounge matchbook led HossC to that intriguing building on the NE corner of S. Hill & W. Adams. :)

As a kid visiting from Illinois in the 1970s I remember being quite impressed by the view of CBS Television City from Beverly Boulevard
(it seemed so modern). Now the view along Beverly is blocked by a fence with shrubs and trees.

After learning Mr. Swan's house was an early Greene & Greene, thanks to Tetsu,
I thought this might be an early Greene & Greene candidate as well. (there are similar details)

Streetcar Signal at West 6th and Alvarado Streets.

[QUOTE=Flyingwedge;6485908]In 1905 it was home to the Los Angeles School of Art and Design:

USC Digital Library -- http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/si.../id/4793/rec/1

The letters over the door seem to indicate the building was originally a hotel or apartment building. Is that a fire or police call box at the curb?
http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/...0.jpg~original

Flyingwedge, a friend of mine brought to my attention your query regarding the pole in front of the LA School of Art and Design with what looks to be a call box. If you look at the top of the pole you will see a semaphore blade and mechanism.

My friend suggested that this was most likely a signal governing Los Angeles Railway streetcars running northbound on Alvarado, whose vision at the intersection, which was also a junction with LARY tracks on West 6Th Street, was limited by the trees in the park and slope of the hill meeting the curve onto West 6Th at that point.

Cheers,
Jack

I don't think that looks like Oliver Hardy. What is the provenance of that photo?

Google his image and see what you think; here are a couple examples of a young Ollie:

Thanks, W-W, and of course to your friend, too, for the info on the streetcar signal! I guess having the pole behind it painted (white?) helped the signal stand out better.

Thank you very much, Biff! That's a welcome find! I'm a big shellac collector, and I take a special interest in the Brunswick label. That's very thoughtful of you.

It's probably too small to see, but the label I use as my icon is from the recording "Home in Pasadena", by Al Jolson with the Isham Jones Orchestra. We have adopted it as the official theme song of our Farm House. I don't have the record of which you show the label, but I sure wish I did!

The cool thing is that this company is still in business. As one might assume, it's the billiards and bowling company. They've been around since 1845. They got into the record business as an outgrowth of their cabinet-making business in 1916, and sold it to Warner Bros in 1930 (the record industry was tanking as a result of the depression and the maturation of network radio) along with the rights to the name for records, radios and record players only. That is why WB films from 1930 say "Brunswick radios and phonographs used exclusively" in the credits.

After a number of corporate handoffs, the label still exists today: http://brunswickrecords.com/classic/

As a long time collector of Fire Alarm and Police Call Boxes I would say this box is unlike any I have seen for L.A.. A front view would surely help I.D.ing it for sure. But a good bet would be a signaling devise for street cars as suggested. My question is who or what supplies the signal. Might it possible be a signal that lets the street car know if switch for track direction is correct for the street car.

Silent film star Barbara La Marr’s funeral attracts large crowd

"Feb. 5, 1926: Thousands of fans gather outside the funeral services for actress Barbara La Marr.

Following several years of fast-paced Hollywood night life, popular silent film star Barbara La Marr passed away at age 29 on Jan. 30, 1926.

An article in the Feb. 6, 1926, Los Angeles Times reported:

Several thousand persons fought desperately with police reserves yesterday afternoon in front of the Walter C. Blue Undertaking Chapel, 717 West Washington street, for a view of the casket of Barbara La Marr as it was carried from the chapel for the trip to its last resting place in Hollywood Cemetery.

Five women fainted during the melee and were rescued from being trampled upon only through the strenuous efforts of police officers.

As Miss La Marr’s remains were placed in the hearse, the crowd broke all restraint and rushed about the funeral cortege.

Traffic along West Washington street was tied up for more than fifteen minutes while police attempted to restore order.

Many hundreds rushed into the funeral parlor, although all objects of attraction to the morbid had been removed, even to the last floral wreath…"

L.A. Times

Bragging that she only slept two hours a night, silent movie star, Barbara La Marr's life was also short (29 years) and pretty wild.

At the age of 14, she was arrested for underage dancing in a Los Angeles burlesque. Three years later she married rancher, Jack Lytell, who promptly died of pneumonia. She quickly moved on to lawyer, Lawrence Converse, who unfortunately was arrested the next day for bigamy. He was so love struck, he knocked himself out banging his head on the cell bars and died of a blood clot. She then married dancer Phil Ainsworth, who was soon sent off to San Quentin for passing bad checks. After a divorce from Phil, she went on to marry Ben Deely (a heavy drinker) and actor Jack Dougherty. Somewhere in all this, she also had time to give birth to an illegitimate baby son, who she sent to actress ZaSu Pitts to raise.

Along with five marriages, she also managed numerous affairs with men allegedly ranging from Ernest Hemmingway to Mussolini (yes that one).

Booze, cocaine, heroin, and morphine finally wore her down and she died of nephritis and tuberculosis.

Supposedly actress Hedy Lamarr was named after her.
