The place was securely locked but after reading the note not the front door I wondered when the board meeting would be re-scheduled, and if I could pop in to see the interior. :)

Going out on a limb. :treehugger:

Interior photos associated with Gov. H T Gage. Unfortunately, I these appear to be of Gage's Sacramento residence when he was running the State. As Gage had the where-with-all to bring the best to his So Cal home, these pics might serve to provide an idea of what a much earlier board meeting might have seen.

The date provided is April 1916, which would have been 13 years after Gage left office. I therefore question both the date and maybe even the given location. (I am sure of very little.) Noirishers, draw your own conclusions.

I marveled at the second image and what appeared to be outwardly bowed or bay windows. Shadows seemed to support this idea but now with the inclusion of the third image, I have my doubts. Could this building have had three remodels or maybe two with an optical illusion?

After some research and study of this photo, I would venture say the locomotive is a
O-4-4T The first set of drivers is difficult to see. It was built to 36" gauge, and converted to 42" on arrival in Los Angeles. Sold 3/10/89 to Los Angeles, Pasadena & Glendale Railway #1. The "T" in O-4-4T stands for tank engine that has a same ben behind the engineers cab for fuel and a saddle tank sitting over and around the boiler. I hope this answer your question.

I have not been inside the Bell Gardens Gage mansion but these photos seem to be mislabeled. The bottom photo is definitely Bell Gardens. You can still see that porte-cochère today attached to the Bell Gardens home!

The tall chimney was probably taken down in an earthquake and replaced with a shortie.

CBD, thanks for your extra scrutiny!

I had minor trepidation over posting on an LA Noir thread what was listed as a Sacramento location. Building looked oddly familiar, but the overgrowth threw me off. There were clearly cosmetic mods to the pediments and a door added where - there might have been an opening for ice deliveries. Guessing the chimney was above the wood stoves.

The former Gov is said to have lived there until '24. So '16 makes sense. And at his advanced age, who is to blame the Ex-Gov. for not getting his weed wacker out of the shed! Could that be the same cook outside front entrance? I suspect the kitchen photos bearing the same dates belong to Bell/Bell Gardens too.

Tentative itinerary. Subject to change - if Aunt Martha gets car sick, again. Then we take her back to the Soldiers Home. And after what happened the last time, no hitch-hikers!

Great stuff, Chuck. Does anyone know the origin of the castle in the background? Was it built for a specific film?

Wondered about the same thing. Assumed it was built as a set. Could it have been part of Von Stoheim's costly epics, or one of Chaney's bigger productions?

Wonderful job you two! I am simply fascinated that it's located in the middle of a trailer park. It's a bit surreal isn't it-

Apparently it was a water tower in disguise. The picture below is dated 1914, before the studio officially opened in March 1915. According to writeups at the time, every structure on the lot was made to be useful in filming, with multiple sides to many of of them for different settings etc.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-p...2520PM.bmp.jpgsame as the web address marring the picture at left

Blaster Sep 4, 2013 7:07 PM

That's interesting and makes sense that everything on the lot would serve a film function.

But I was actually referring to that distant castle-like structure on the left hand side of the postcard.

:previous: Good find GW, I guess we should have been able to figure that one out. (but didn't)

From http://www.theatreorgans.com/grounds/docs/rumors.html
"The original name of the Leslie Speaker was "Vibratone." Leslie Speakers were also called "Brittain Speakers." In 1941, Don Leslie formed a disastrous partnership with one Lou Brittain and early nameplates identify the manufacturer as the "Brittain Sound Equipment Co." This partnership was dissolved after the war."

The 1940 census for 5435 Victoria reveals a radio salesman named... Louis Brittain:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-X...225%2520PM.jpg

From January 1968 until September 1980 I worked for the Electro Music Company in Pasadena. This was the company that Don Leslie began after WW2, and was purchased by CBS Inc. in 1966 along with Fender Guitar in Fullerton as the start of a musical instrument division. I knew Don Leslie personally and was the cabinet engineer and designer of many Leslie models.
His business during those first years after the war was so fragile that he would never let customers see his very small facility in west Pasadena. Laurens Hammond would have gladly put him out of business but I think he underestimated him and probably never saw the CBS buyout coming. After Hammond’s death, the two companies got together in 1968 and produced the first Leslie to be sold with a new Hammond Organ. In 1980, Hammond bought the company from CBS and moved the manufacturing to the Chicago area. Don Leslie had retired by that time.
During much of the late 60’s and into the early 70’s Leslie manufactured about 100 speaker systems a day. But the market began to dry up with advancements in electronics, and today a small number of the products are still manufactured for the “purists” who will never settle for digital sound.
I have a soft spot for Leslie because that’s where I met my wife. It was nice little company to work for but they didn’t pay worth a crap!

Funny how that happens! My first job out of graduate school, in the mid-1980s, was as a subject indexer for a Chatsworth publisher of insurance law materials; the pay was bad and the commute worse. But the indexers all had advanced degrees of one sort or another, typically a JD or an MLS, and the casual chit-chat around the office delved into all sorts of interesting topics in history, language, music, and politics. No other place I've ever worked has come close in that regard.

When you get a bunch of JDs not practicing law and a bunch of MLSs not working as librarians together in a room, they do tend to be interested in and knowledgeable about all sorts of things.

Like many of the people here. :D

If you compare it to the bicycle parked next to it, that would make the thing taller than a person, so I don't think it is an umbrella holder with an umbrella sticking out of the top of it.

Maybe it is some sort of community bulletin board (?). That wouldn't explain why it is basically on open-framed box, unless different items were hung from it.

This 1904 photo looks west at 6th Street (on the left), with buildings on Spring and Broadway closest to the camera. In the right foreground, to the right of H. Arnold's Furniture Warehouse, is the Spring Street School. Behind the right side of the school are those two skinny, five- and four-story buildings from the above sepia photo.
