I caught the last half of this obscure Neo-Noir on cable yesterday.

"Un home est mort" (it's original title) was filmed on location in Los Angeles.

Here' a brief description.

http://altscreen.com/11/09/2011/wedn...side-man-1973/

It also has a jazzy film score by Michel Lagrand.

Here's a compilation of scenes from 'The Outside Man' set to Mr. Lagrand's amazing film score.
The video contains spoilers, so if you haven't seen the film you might want to wait.

side-note:
In 1968 Michel Lagrand recorded at 'Shelly's Manne-Hole'; a live trio session with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne,
in which four of the compositions were improvised on the spot.

To see a photograph of Shelly's Manne-Hole (located on Cahuenga between Sunset and Hollywood Blvd.) go here:

1983 proposal for a subway station at Wilshire & La Brea. The Tilford's building is gone in this plan.

If only they had gone ahead with building the subway back then!

Seen this sketch and many more before. Nothing new for me to get exited about. The reason the subway stopped were the methane gas fires under the red line in the early 90's. Porky Pig politician urged the authorities to stop this subway madness, now he's begging for its continued construction, henry Waxman, is his name.

In 1940 he is listed as residing with his family at 326 E. 59th Place in Los Angeles. That house is also still there.

His WWII draft card shows the Manchester address as the place his family could be reached and lists his sister-in-law as the contact.

Just curious, if he was 48 in 1940, would he have had a draft card?

It didn't elude you, E_R, are you aware you posted about it on Dec. 26th? :)

Just a guess Martin but he could have meant a military ID card.

This is an odd little snapshot. It almost looks like a scene from a movie.

He did register. The address of the restaurant was on the card as his business address.

Perhaps a place to go after getting lit at the Cliff Dwellers.

Yes, the end of Modern Times, Charlie Chaplin and Paulette Goddard.

I think this photograph really gives you an idea of the size of the project in relation to it's surroundings.
I've never liked this apartment complex. When I lived in L.A. I also thought it looked like a Communist Block(s), or a hospital multiplied by 13.

You proved your point Martin_Pal. I have a terrible memory. (in all fairness, most of those posts are just one or two sentences)
Did you watch the Michel Lagrand jazz score clip? What did you think?

Right you are! Makes me believe that shot was purposely posed that way.

Forerunner to the jukebox?

I found this photo of a rather fanciful looking contraption on ebay a couple years back and was inspired today to look into its origins a bit.

U.S. Patent Office

As far as I can tell the patent for this machine was issued to one Harry T. Scott who was listed as a machinist in the 1915 City Directory.
http://i1037.photobucket.com/albums/...e-mailview.jpg
archive.org

His address was listed as 757 E. 20th, four houses down the street from the address given on the sign in the photo.

Google Maps

Today this is a neighborhood of houses built mostly in the early to mid 1920s. Cylinders were still being made for sound reproduction up until the depression, although they were falling out of favor, with discs being the preferred medium by the late 20s. What I'm wondering is whether machines such as this would have been made in a residential district or whether this area was more of a manufacturing area a few years before these houses were built? 831 looks as if it has been added onto twice so I suppose it could have served as a small scale manufacturing plant.

Not meant to be a criticism.
And known only to the search function: it wouldn't look up "Outside."
That clip was not playing for me for some reason.

It does seem odd for a random snapshot, so you may be right about a movie connection, ethereal_reality. Completely random guess here, but from behind the man bears a striking resemblance to Buster Keaton. The shape of the hair, the slouch of the shoulders, the hat, and even the jacket. Any guesses?

Got to give props to anyone who acknowledges past mistakes. I think Zev Yaroslovsky went through a similar change of mind.

Wasn't 1983 just about when they did start building it?
