I don't know. Nothing wrong with the building, but from my travels, based on the renderings I would describe this as more-or-less average.

I'd prefer the rounded corner version, but this still appears to be a very attractive, elegant, and possibly refined gem of a box. I love it.......

CNA maybe.........?...........although I wouldn't have expected them to be a particularly good candidate for new construction, so if it is, that might surprise me a bit.....

It's fine. It could be taller and less boring but what we are getting is decent enough. Sad to see the beautiful top of Randolph tower obstructed from the west but I'll get over it.

Only if you're 300 feet away or further. It looks like the entry sequence will in fact be carefully carved out of the larger building form in a beautiful way, very similar to Ronan's Poetry Foundation.

I look forward to walking past this building, even if I'm not excited about seeing it from blocks away.

I hate the word "filler" in architecture, but I think it applies here. This building will not be visible in the skyline and is surrounded by taller towers. Rather than being bold and brash, it is quietly elegant, with just enough action around the entrance to create a good streetscape as well. I do wish there were some kind of public component; looks like the little plaza at the entrance is subtly designed to discourage outsiders from lingering there.

That's the existing garage at 215 W. Lake St., site of the proposed 30+ story rental tower designed by Thomas Roszak. This will be a busy block with all the demo and, especially, if both projects start construction in the same time frame.

Thanks! In hindsight, I guess I should have been able to work that out.

Here's the site, as of around 2:00pm today:

Looks like demolition for the residential tower at Wells and Lake has started too.

^ Adios, lowest and worst use Loop building!

I'd imagine we'll be hearing of financing/groundbreaking/possible additional tenant(s) info in the next few weeks or couple months at most for the tower.....

An empty lot has never looked so beautiful.

Good morning James Mac. Can we trouble you to please use your excellent vantage point to capture the demo of that post-fire building on the site of 200 W Lake?

Thanks in advance!

well news on Crains reports CNA moving into this building so looks like it won't be too long for this building to start rising.
On that note I wonder if CNA building will be converted to residential, its in an amazing spot so wouldn't be surprised although would be sad to see Chicago downtown lose office space

CNA selling big red moving HQ to new office tower

Quote:

The CNA deal will kick off construction of the third new office tower of this development cycle, the first since the recession. Buck recently demolished a former Walgreens store on the site and hopes to begin building the tower in January, according to John Buck Principal Bill Rolander.

munchymunch Dec 16, 2015 9:02 PM

This is going to be called The CNA Center according to crains.

Steely Dan Dec 16, 2015 9:10 PM

^ and as part of the deal, buck is apparently purchasing CNA's "big red" tower.

i wonder what he plans to do with that? i hope to god it stays big & red.

rlw777 Dec 16, 2015 9:17 PM

^ The crain's article mentioned they might consider trying to use some of the upper floors of it for condos.

I'm glad this building is going to start but would have preferred an announcement about 130 N Franklin.

Isn't CNA landmarked? I know the blue-grey modernist little brother next door to it is. As long as they don't mutilate it like 55 E Monroe. I would love an upper floor condo in CNA with floor to ceiling glass and 10' ceilings. Wow, what a great development that would be. I wouldn't even mind them insetting a few rows of windows for pocket balconies as long as they do it subtly.
