But it’s amazing how many out of towners visit Chicago and still think they need a rental car. Obviously for some people it’s justified, but for many it seems to be ignorance.

My cousin’s family from Atlanta came to Chicago to vacation and see the sites and attractions a few years ago and they rented a car for literally no reason.

They probably just assumed that Chicago was similar to Atlanta, where you literally have to drive everywhere

Frankly, I really love the park, I think it's a great asset for that part of the west loop, and I feel that it will get a lot of use in the warmer months.

Hopefully the Old Post Office moves forward soon with the river development on its east side. Once completed, this park plus that could potentially make Van Buren very active and an interesting area.

If you're flying to O'Hare or Midway and visiting family in the suburbs, a rental car makes sense. The transit system isn't set up for suburb-to-suburb trips.

If you're arriving at Union Station on a train, you have easy access on CTA or Metra trains to every corner of the region.

What a presence this building has in the area southwest of the Loop. Hopefully this, and the OPO, collectively spur development in this direction and helps expand the skyline south and west!

Skyguy_7 May 13, 2021 3:03 AM

I was pleasantly surprised yesterday to see MORE steel extending about 20’ atop the core. Unexpected height. Photo to follow!

...And to the West, when seen from the north side. Great impact all around, and edging out 800 W Fulton for my #2 ranked spot of the new office towers this boom.

1. River Point
2. BMO Tower
3. 800 W Fulton
4. 150 N Wacker
5. 167 N Green (Hell of a penthouse)
6. 110 (it has great angles, but also very boring angles (from the south)
TBD: Salesforce

A little late, but here's a shot from a couple weeks ago. Scaled the building for some view shots & took some from park level, too. Hope to have more to share soon:

I guess I wasn't anticipating that BMO would have a sizable impact from the river (looking north on south branch and looking south from confluence).

It's huge - coming N on wells and then West on the Ike it dominates

It's really cool to see this extending the skyline significantly to the south.

To be honest, I was bummed the SOM proposal, the Cheese Grater, didn't win for this spot. This one has turned out quite nice, an excellent addition to the city. I'm a fan.

As some background, the original programming for this site actually retained a considerable parking component to serve Amtrak, and what is today a public park was originally a rooftop amenity deck atop a multi-story garage along Clinton. Like with some other recent projects, it was the alderman who beat down the number of parking spaces and the incorporation of a public park. The trade off is that car rentals are no longer offered from Union Station.

But the need for parking, dock, and pedway entrances and a large level space for park programming combined with the slope across the site resulted in the raised platform. In addition as rivernorthlurker noted, it was desirable to provide a barrier between the bus station and the park both for noise and fumes.

That said, many efforts were made to make the park and podium as welcoming from the street as possible. Along Van Buren the park slopes down to grade, be visually open to the street, and include 3 paths to enter the park. The wall along Clinton is held as low as possible, including a section in the middle that will slope down close to the sidewalk with terraced greenery offering a glimpse into the park. There are landscaped entrances into the park at both corners and the wall will have the same folded design as the curtainwall to make for a more interesting pedestrian experience. I would compare it to walking outside Millennium Park along Monroe and Columbus at the SE corner.

Thanks for the info, it's appreciated.
Imo a slightly raised park a much better option than a parking garage (which was there before iirc). It's also better than a parking garage with park on top which would be incredibly removed from the streetscape.

The more I look at it I can see how they used grade changes to make the park more inviting. The circular cut out with landscaping looks good - it helps break up the blank wall. I think I'll have to experience it in person. But overall it's much better than what was there before so that's already a win.

They’re actually building the top like the rendering. Unlike 110 with that horrible mechanical box at the top :runaway:

I think we all would have preferred that cheese grater design from SOM? a few years back but this guy really does stand out in the West Loop gate. Second pic is from Northerly Island and you can see it poking out.

Marble installation is getting underway along with the glass fins for the lobby. Spanning between the fins will be single 10'x40' laminated glass sheets.

Is this leftover marble from the lobby of 110 Wacker? Looks exactly the same. :P

They are definitely related lobby designs. Though 110 has vertical extruded accordion walls with a lit reveal at the outer fold, where as this wall will start out straight and flat at the bottom and fold into the accordion pattern by the time it reaches the ceiling. Also maybe not as obvious yet since it's not lit but 110 is gray marble and this is white.

I know it's been mentioned before but it is interesting the BMO is apparently not concerned that their building is an obvious cousin to Bank of America's. But IMO, BMO also got the more interesting, and next level of refined building, and that goes for the lobby design as well.

Appreciate your detailed insight. Somewhat joking about the marble - but yeah I expect the lobby to turn out very similar looking to 110. Though I'm excited to see how the balconies/landings on the setbacks turn out on both of these buildings and am looking forward to some pictures in due course.
