Last I heard construction was to start in early 2017, so hopefully we will hear something soon.

I read somewhere that demolition of the existing mall would start at the end of May.

Amazon poised to lease iconic new Seattle office tower, dramatically expanding footprint again

Quote:

Amazon is close to locking down one of the most high-profile office projects in the Seattle region, indicating that it is nowhere near done growing its Seattle presence.

The Rainier Square project is one of the biggest available blocks of space in the area, and three commercial real estate sources told GeekWire that Amazon has a “pending” lease for the entirety of the office portion of the mixed-use structure. That means the major points have been hashed out, sources said, and only final details remain.

The project, which shares a downtown Seattle block with the uniquely designed Rainier Tower, includes a 58-story office and residential building as well as a 12-story hotel. The office space totals 710,000 square feet on the lower floors, with 220 residential units above. The adjacent hotel has 165 rooms.

Greg Johnson, president of Wright Runstad & Co., the developer on the project, declined to comment on leasing details. Amazon representatives did not respond to a request for comment.

Johnson said construction is slated to begin in the next couple months. Due to the construction, all the retail in the existing Rainier Tower has closed.

The Puget Sound Business Journal previously reported that Amazon was interested in the space.

So Seattle's getting in on the boot tower action lol, reminds me a lot of the Eau Du Soleil project. Could be iconic if done right.

Will be exciting to see this rise, looks ready for take off soon:

With Amazon as the tenant, work starts on Seattle skyscraper

Amazon is taking all 722,000 square feet of office space in the high-rise that will be Seattle's second tallest building after Columbia Center. (rest of article is behind paywall)

Can't wait for this one. Seattle has several buildings in the 700 foot range with a sudden jump to the 900+ range. An 850 footer has been in much need for over 25 years. Glad this looks about to start.

What was the reason for designing this unusual piece in this manner?? I give it 8/10 as it is definitely different but a bit monolithic in form. The cladding looks killer though, if it has lighting features at night, 9.5/10!

Rainier Square shops come down to make way for Rainier Square tower

http://customer.djc.com/stories/imag...reDemo_big.jpg

Quote:

Rhine Demolition is using four excavators to tear up the old retail spaces in Rainier Square, below the pedestal-based Rainier Tower at 1301 Fifth Ave.

The shops will be replaced by a 58-story building — also called Rainier Square — that will become the centerpiece of Wright Runstad & Co.'s full-block redevelopment.

The iconic 41-story Rainier Tower won't be altered.

The new tower will have 722,000 square feet of office space for Amazon on the lower floors. Floors 41-58 will have 200 luxury apartments, including penthouses on the top two floors.

A sky lobby on the 40th floor will separate the offices and apartments.

The first two levels of Rainier Square will have 79,000 square feet of retail/amenity/fitness space, including an Equinox gym and a 20,000-square-foot organic food market. Parking for 1,000 cars will be on six levels below grade.

A second phase will add a 163-room hotel in a separate 12-story building adjacent to the towers. It will be developed by Wright Runstad and New York-based Related Cos.

The Rainier Square project website shows hotel construction starting in late 2018 and finishing in summer 2020.

I like a lot of Seattle's new construction but this proposal is really unfortunate. What is the point of this ugly boot shape? Why is part of the corner randomly cut off? The facade makes a really half-hearted forced attempt at texture, totally nonsensical design. Seattle's skyline right now is very well balanced and pleasing, sucks that this project will now throw that off and the city will be stuck with this wart for decades to come. I was really hoping the design would change or it would die, NIMBYs should have killed this.

Great description, I love it as well. It will look like any other building in skyline shots but up close will be quite an eye catcher.

Yeah, if there's one thing the world needs, its more NIMBY's

This is a perfect example of how subjective things like architecture are because I haven't been this excited about any project in the city for a very long time for both it's height and design. It's location is wild too, right next to the beaver/golf tee building so you can be assured skyscraper/architecture nerds like us will be all over the two of them snapping pics.

agreed, this looks like a pretty damn impressive development for seattle.

both for its presence in the skyline at large and down at street level where the interplay with rainier tower's funky inverted base should make for a very interesting juxtaposition.

the height is also a nice plus and will really help solidify seattle as one top 10 US skylines in terms of size and height, IMO.

How is it that the tallest project in decades in one of the best skylines in North America hasn't had any pictures taken of it in almost a month?

WTF?

This YouTube channel seems to be uploading semi daily demolition timelapse videos of the project.

Thanks. It's fitting too since I just saw a dentist for the first time in years so I thought it would be expensive but it was only $143

The proposed treatment on the other hand is $12,000 :runaway:

I'm glad you avoided a big expense, Phil. As far as your name goes, it's a great one.
