The Googlemobile seems to show that the apartment building to the left of the church remains, now at 7022 S. Menlo. The church itself has relocated to 109th Place and Normandie Ave.

When HenryHuntington identified the location of e_r's recent "mystery location", I went to check it out. The "S-curve" is clearly visible on the 1921 Baist map.

It's also marked on this 1934 Electric Car and Bus Routes map.

However, by 1952, almost no trace of the S-curve can be seen.

Today, only the buildings on the east side of S Vermont between W 71st Street and W Florence Avenue give any clue to where the F-line used to run.

Thanks for your location identification of Sardi's Wilshire, GW.

OK, a little help here.

This photograph dated 1928 shows film actress Sally Eilers and Ralph Mackey posing for a publicity shot for "The Good-Bye Kiss".

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...908/j7RUOM.jpg
http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/co...id/69970/rec/8

If you turn the photograph over, this label is attached to the back.

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/320...903/oRVoaS.jpg
http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/co...id/69970/rec/8

But if you look at the photograph Hoss posted earlier http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=33059,
it doesn't appear to match the roof of the Cinderella Roof building.

And yet, if you study the view in the background, it does seem to be in the right location as the Cinderella Roof.

So what do you think? Are they standing on the roof of the Cinderella Roof?

I think the picture was taken at the back of the roof of the building with the colonnade front. I've arrowed the rough location on this 1927 aerial view.

Here's a slightly different angle from the front with a better view of the roof. This image dates from 1930.

Oh I see. I was looking for the balustrade in the publicity photo.

I see it now (red arrow)

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...903/Oe6O1f.jpg

I wonder why the photographer didn't take the actors to the front of the building?
-it just seems like an odd spot on the roof to take a photo.

The good news is, we have another Cinderella Roof photograph. :)

So great that Hoss C. posted this photo.

Alice Faye and "Sugie" (Harry Sugarman, of the Tropics Beverly Hills) opened The Club Car, at San Vicente & Wilshire in February 1941. I guess this was it.

It doesn't seem to have operated very long, because by NYE 1941 it had become Sardi's Wilshire.

I wonder about this place, if it had gangster/mob backing.

Jerry's Joynt was advertising here as of 1943.

Lila Leeds got into a scuffle at an unnamed cafe here in June 1949 followed by drunk driving in the 100 block of Gale Dr.

Frank Kerwin opened his Wilshire Seacomber 11-1-1950. It was still Seacomber when there was an arson fire here in November 1953.

The bottom two photos in HossC's post 33082 show the block bounded by West 70th and 71st Street, and South Hoover Street and South Menlo Avenue. It was the site of Mount Carmel High School, my alma mater.

The b&w photo shows the school.

MCHS, a boys Catholic high school run by the Carmelite Order, was established in 1935 and closed in 1976. It was closed due to declining enrollment and a change in the demographics of the surrounding neighborhoods from which the school drew students.

Here is a website about the school - great pictures, note the changes in dress, styles and cars:

http://mtcarmelcrusaders.org

The school was used for interiors and some exteriors of the Ramones movie Rock and Roll High School, and was blown up at the end of the movie.

We must have used ours, since I recall there being a bottle stored somewhere at my house with only a little left in the bottom

All this talk in the news about the Rams coming back to Los Angeles has brought it to my attention that they aren't in fact in Los Angeles now. I don't read the sports sheets much. Last I heard, they'd come from Cleveland in 1946 and, I assumed, stayed happily ever after.

I guess this probably means the Dons aren't in Los Angeles anymore, either.

:previous: Thanks for this Hoss.

While snooping around in the area I happened across this interesting building. (circled below)

Looking worse for wear, it was no-doubt a fine looking art deco building back in the day.

Also of note in the area (a half block north from the deco lodge) is this auditorium entrance at St. Raphael Elementary School on W. 70th Street.

And here's the other end of the parochial school. (I especially like the bay window. Could this be the principal's office?)

For a little context, posts from the immediate area, circa 1940 can be found here: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=20226 . Sardi's (or whatever it was called in 1940) low profile keeps it hidden in these pictures. Tracks may have provided a convenient means of transporting "Sardi's" to that location.

I'm almost sad that I know where today's Julius Shulman picture was taken, because the last couple of "mystery locations" have generated some great follow-ups. The Lerner Shops seen here was at 749 S Broadway. It's "Job 170: Wurdeman & Becket, Lerner Shops (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1948".

http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original
Getty Research Institute

The building is still there, but this corner of Broadway is looking a bit tatty. A fresh coat of paint would go a long way to helping the old Lerner Shops store, but I don't understand why only the lower third of the building to the right was clad in mirrored glass.

Martin Pal posted this picture last July. Near the left is the Lerner Shops on Hollywood Boulevard.
