When HenryHuntington identified the location of e_r's recent "mystery location", I went to check it out. The "S-curve" is clearly visible on the 1921 Baist map.

OK, a little help here.

This photograph dated 1928 shows film actress Sally Eilers and Ralph Mackey posing for a publicity shot for "The Good-Bye Kiss".

it doesn't appear to match the roof of the Cinderella Roof building.



And yet, if you study the view in the background, it does seem to be in the right location as the Cinderella Roof.

The bottom two photos in HossC's post 33082 show the block bounded by West 70th and 71st Street, and South Hoover Street and South Menlo Avenue. It was the site of Mount Carmel High School, my alma mater.

The b&w photo shows the school.

MCHS, a boys Catholic high school run by the Carmelite Order, was established in 1935 and closed in 1976. It was closed due to declining enrollment and a change in the demographics of the surrounding neighborhoods from which the school drew students.

The school was used for interiors and some exteriors of the Ramones movie Rock and Roll High School, and was blown up at the end of the movie.

All this talk in the news about the Rams coming back to Los Angeles has brought it to my attention that they aren't in fact in Los Angeles now. I don't read the sports sheets much. Last I heard, they'd come from Cleveland in 1946 and, I assumed, stayed happily ever after.

Sardi's (or whatever it was called in 1940) low profile keeps it hidden in these pictures. Tracks may have provided a convenient means of transporting "Sardi's" to that location.

I'm almost sad that I know where today's Julius Shulman picture was taken, because the last couple of "mystery locations" have generated some great follow-ups. The Lerner Shops seen here was at 749 S Broadway. It's "Job 170: Wurdeman & Becket, Lerner Shops (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1948".

The building is still there, but this corner of Broadway is looking a bit tatty. A fresh coat of paint would go a long way to helping the old Lerner Shops store, but I don't understand why only the lower third of the building to the right was clad in mirrored glass.
