Apparently it is there in the lobby--

The Times reported on October 13, 2002, that the "...bronze eagle sculpture, which weighs more than 200 pounds and has a wingspan of 7 1/2 feet.... was designed by Gutzon Borglum, the noted sculptor of Mt. Rushmore, while he was living in Sierra Madre in the 1890s. The statue stood atop three successive Los Angeles Times buildings from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century; it now stands in the Times lobby as a symbol of courage and strength."

And something more recent from LA Weekly: http://www.laweekly.com/bestof/2012/...useum-1889741/

Holy cow, those doors manage to be both comical and deadly serious all at once--love it!

I already knew Joe holed up at the Alto Nido (when not dodging the repo man, of course)......

........but to take one look at the Peter Graves pic and place it like that?

Impressive.

Per the American Truck Historical Society: "When Kelly introduced their own water cooled engine in 1912 they became Kelly-Springfield. This was also the year the Renault-style hood with the radiator behind it was introduced also. K-S built trucks ranging from one to six tons. By 1929 Kelly-Springfield trucks were gone."

Makes more sense than a Renault. Looks like the Kelly Co. did a good job of copying the basic design.

the derby used to be located on the west side of alexandria, but was relocated to the east side in 1937. the construction that is occurring on the former site of the derby is for the chapman park hotel bungalows and the zephyr room restaurant. i'm dating this photograph 1938, (that's my story, an' i'm stickin' to it)

Lesser quality image of same general vicinity, different angle, and according to source, similar date (ca.'38). Far right, noticed the corner of a sign with the letter "A" visible. Any idea what it says and is it also visible in gsjansen's post above? (AMbassador? ARlington? AUburn? AMbulance?)

Prominent in both photos is EL Cord's Auburn-Cord showroom/dealership housed in the Auburn-Fuller Bldg. at Mariposa and Wilshire - and his radio station KFAC KF "Auburn Cord." Yes, GW mentioned this here> http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=2135

Mr. Cord had architect Paul Williams design a modest 32,000 sq. foot home located on the corner of Hillcrest and Doheny in Beverly Hills. It was dubbed "Cordhaven" and it may not have received any attention here.

Noticed a photo of a Cord auto without much accompanying information other than an attribution to Dick Whittington. For what it's worth, there is a N. Clarence Street in Boyle Heights.

Found this bit of info:

Errett Lobban{E. L.} Cord estate. 10-acre Southern planter's mansion designed by noted architect Paul R. Williams. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Williams_(architect) Landscape architect A. E. Hanson. Resembling a pastoral East Coast setting featuring tennis courts, Olympic-sized pool with bathhouse, a large party pavilion and spacious stable with living quarters, an aviary and kennels. During the Great Depression of the 1930's this estate was known as "party central" in Beverly Hill! Demolished in 1963 with only the short street Cord Circle as a reminder.

That's the street sign attached to the Wilshire Special at the northeast corner of Wilshire and ALEXANDRIA.... (The rise of Wilshire toward the east accounts for its difference in height from its counterpart on the northwest corner.)

Good eyes! Thanks.

I discounted the sign because it did seem higher than the gsj image and since the bell shaped objects seemed missing. Come to think of it, are the bell shapes functional or decorative? They appear to be two dimensional, an homage to the El Camino Real? (Below)

Per sopas ej's earlier post, some street signs were clearly dark lettering on a light background and a work in progress. Change was in the air and on the street signs.;)

That's a bus-stop sign. I don't think the alignment of El Camino Real through L.A. included Wilshire--the east-west alignment was along Sunset. Here's a previous thread post on El Camino Real:
