As a huge fan of the movie, I began a search like this long ago and quickly discovered that such a project has already been done and posted online. http://www.gchudleigh.com/madworld.htm  |

:previous: Intriguing photograph GW.
I'm curious, is the impressive house at far right (with the three dormers) still there? -and what's up with the chimney on the excellent Clinton Sterry House? It looks like three cigarettes. __ Albany_NY, Ok OK OK. I'll watch It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World from start to..........................................finish. __ |
I haven't explored this website yet, but has anyone else? It's called whatwasthere.com.
Here's one example I've seen so far: https://scontent-a-lax.xx.fbcdn.net/...58342275_n.png whatwasthere.com Now click on the link, and watch the 1929 photo of Barkie's fade away to what's there now. Kind of depressing, but also enlightening in the sense that you now know what was there. :P http://www.whatwasthere.com/browse.a...fo/sv/zoom/14/ If this has already been posted, then my apologies. I've been away so long from this thread. I have yet to catch up on it. |

The L.A. Times ran this photo and story today:
https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/77...0/823/giao.jpg L.A. Times Conflicting traffic signals Posted By: Scott Harrison Posted On: 12:22 a.m. | January 29, 2014 April 5, 1948: The intersection of 5th and Grand has conflicting semaphore traffic signals. One says “stop” and the other says “go.” But help was on the way. Los Angeles was in transition from these old signals to the three-light devices. An article in the April 11, 1948, Los Angeles Times reported that out of 1,400 traffic-signal-controlled intersections in the city, 630 still had the semaphore signals. About 150 old signals were replaced in 1947 with the new devices “and its yellow caution light which gleams for a few seconds between the green and red.” This photo by retired staff photographer Paul Calvert was published on April 11, 1948. Here is another 1940's L.A. "drive around" youtube. I don't think we have seen this one...but I'm not positive. :fingerscrossed: https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/79...0/802/fkea.jpg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vNwVD6Xxxg There is a Coffee Dan's along the way: https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/78...0/841/dxly.jpg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vNwVD6Xxxg |
Brew 102
I don't recall this particular view being posted - I could be wrong. Pretty iconic none the less - Union Station, Maier Brewery, Gasometers, Aliso Street, PE and noir rides… If it's appeared before, forgive me, my memory is not what it used to be.

Just a non-photographic comment that there has been a lot of good stuff here the past few weeks - I especially enjoyed FredH's series and flyingwedge's work on that Baldwin Hills house. Plus even Sopas_ej has come back to post. Great work, e_r on keeping it all going.
