Calgary 9 LRV

Here are some phone pics of the new trains

Cool pics, thanks! Those bogies look complex!

Who's idea was it to put polished red benches though? I've heard a lot of complaints about existing seats being to slippery, these look treacherous.

holhm22 Dec 13, 2015 8:10 PM

Awesome share!

Calgarian Dec 13, 2015 9:12 PM

I really like the look of the new trains!

They look just like the benches in the Shanghai Metro. I've never found that kind of seat to be too slippery, plus they're obviously incredibly easy to keep clean, which is probably the whole point.

Design-mind Dec 13, 2015 11:25 PM

Are these being assembled here in Calgary?

I'm pretty disappointing they are again using hard plastic seats. Can we at least try to make public transit enjoyable?

I think there were bigger complaints about the benches with individually formed seats, as people couldn't shuffle up and down to accommodate an especially large or small person.

outoftheice Dec 14, 2015 8:08 AM

Thumbs up for having a flat bench seat as it is an improvement over the current 'bucket seat' design that doesn't allow people to slide along the bench to comfortably space themselves. Thumbs down for the bench being hard plastic without any sort of padding. Definitely does not look like a comfortable way to spend 30 minutes on your way downtown.

Honestly, these kind of hard plastic benches aren't as uncomfortable as they look - trust me, I've got lots of experience on that.

Durability and ease of cleaning are far more important to transit agencies than the slight bit more comfort you might get if the seats had a bit of padding.

I really haven't had an issue with the hard plastic benches in the current SD-160 vehicles (some having benches like above, others having individual seats). I mean, this is coming from a healthy guy in his mid-20s, so there are all the caveats that come with that, but it seems like the shape of a seat matters as much as how hard it is.

CorporateWhore Dec 14, 2015 2:49 PM

The have similar hard benches on the newer trains in NYC, and they are are actually pretty comfortable to sit on. At the end of the day though they are probably much more practical when it comes to cleaning and longevity...."comfort" is pretty far down the line when it comes to a commuter train packed with people. Most people will be standing anyway.

This is definitely the right way to go. I used to ride the subway on a daily basis and never found the hard plastic to be uncomfortable.

I prefer the look of the render.

holhm22 Dec 14, 2015 10:07 PM

Wish they would get rid of the tedious button to open doors but it's still here. Sigh

I understand those that argue closed doors will keep it warmer during winter time but it will only be open for a few seconds anyways so I'd rather be cold for a bit than having to press a stupid button. Just my personal $0.02 probably absolutely nobody agrees on.

That and now since the door arrangement is different from the other cars, there is no possibility for APGs even though there never was in the first place. That was another one of my reasons to want button less doors. That would've meant synchronized doors which could've opened the possibility for APGs. Also, it would've been nice to have fully articulated trains. But no, Calgary Transit is still too behind the times...

Am I asking for too much? Lol

Yeah that doesn't look very similar...

So once they roll these out, are the original C-train cars done for good?

This article (http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/calgary/Calgary+Transit+cars+200M/8898525/story.html) is a bit old, but says 25 of the 60 are devoted to fleet replacement (35 for expansion).

This (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CTrain#Rolling_stock) says that 27 of the U2's were from the initial order for the south line, which probably matches up with the 25 to be replaced once you consider written-off cars. Many additional U2's came later with the NE and NW lines.

Just a short update, car 2401 is at customs and should arrive in Calgary on January 16th. Also, I had some time over the holidays to reorganize the Calgary series 9 pages and add more pictures. Navigation should be a bit easier as well.

ooh thanks for the heads up

Chadillaccc Jan 2, 2016 1:53 AM

Why did they cheap out and not continue the livery to the bottom of the cars? The gold looks super cheap. It should be a continuation of the red and white swoop pattern.

Even white, red, or black would look better than the beige.

What you see in the pics is what the car looked like in the middle of October. When it finally gets here, the livery should match the rest of the fleet - series 5, 6, 7, and 8. I prefer the mostly white color scheme of the concept drawings as I think there is too much red on the front part of the roof and that's why I refer to these as the Little Red Riding Hood trains.

Rat Jan 8, 2016 11:01 PM

Five months late but car 2401 had finally arrived in Calgary on Wednesday and was offloaded this morning at Haysboro siding. It's going to be kept under wraps until it gets moved to Anderson garage later today.

So they kept the livery with the beige on the underside. How disappointing and shitty looking. The cars look nice anyways, but why not just complete the livery? Seems like a needlessly cut corner.

Huh? I'm pretty sure they did complete it! The coloration is more of a grey, which is in line with the livery that exists out there currently. You'll notice the red swoop extends beyond the high floor line, and passes below it towards the middle of the car.

The picture we saw before didn't have the completed red swoop. And was more gold in coloration.

Guys, does it really matter? Within a month they will have an enormous advertisement plastered on the side of it, covering the train from top to bottom, and it will look like shit anyways.

For a while I thought that too, but that doesn't make sense if every damn C-Train in the fleet carries the orange Shock Top livery.

Honestly though, I hate those full-body advertisements. For one, they are supremely ugly and at times jarring. For two, it is nearly impossible to enjoy any kind of view from the window during dark winter commutes when it's covered in the advertisement sticker. Might as well be in a tunnel when you ride on those trains.

DizzyEdge Jan 14, 2016 1:45 AM

I would love to know how much fares would need to go up if all transit full wrap advertising was eliminated.

I agreed, the full-body wraps don't respect transit riders by blocking the view and sun from getting in.

I would be more than happy if they refused funding from full-body wraps. Or at least stopped advertising truck advertisements. It would be like Subway
doing in-store advertising for McDonalds.

looks like the opposite side has red LEDs, maybe an indicator for which door is in operations for that particular stop?

I see where you're trying to go, but maybe not the best example - unless Subway is a publically owned business that gets half its operating costs from our tax dollars? I'm sure Transit would love to keep people from buying cars, but they know it's not realistic, and it's a good source of income to help keep Transit service running. A necessary evil.

Door lights up green if door is unlocked, red if locked, and flashes red when closing.

That is fancy stuff! Thanks for the info :) When should we expect the first trainset to be rolled out?

You're likely looking at March sometime - still just have the one car, so you're waiting for at least two more to arrive, and for all three to be commissioned. Then comes operator training.

It takes time to commission and work the bugs out of the first few cars, as there's usually a number of things that aren't quite right from the factory, and they need to be adjusted on site in Calgary. Typically after the first half dozen or so, most of the major bugs are identified and corrected before the cars leave Sacramento, so commissioning time drops from about 6 weeks to mere days by the end of the order.

Fuzz Jan 14, 2016 1:15 PM

Are these the ones we have been waiting for for 4 car service? Or has that already started? last I heard it was starting early December...March sounds like a big delay.

Four car service started in a limited form in November. Only one or two consists currently due to available LRV's.

The new LRV's though I do say are looking sharp, even if the livery is different than what we all thought it would be.

Do you know if there have been any improvements to how it deals with people holding the door open, delaying the train?
