ALT Hotel Proposal
I thought this would be worthy of a poll seeing as so many seem to hate this proposal, but some like it.

Myself, I voted depends on materials. If the facade is stucco, it won't be good, but if it's aluminium or some sort of spandrel type material, it could be good. Painted concrete would even be good.

Neutral, suppose I was just expecting more when I heard Germain Group was building another hotel here.
I like the big Maxwell Bates like windows
Some of those interior shots are pretty funky looking, see top of their twitter page
https://twitter.com/ALTHotel |
I don't think it's ugly by any means, and in some ways the simplicity of it will be more timeless than a lot of over-wrought details you see on condos today....but I was definitely hoping for a little more imagination with this one considering the location.
I like the Alt logo.
I like it better than the EV Hilton.
100% dependant on materials. I like the simple massing, and the windows, but if this thing is stucco, then forget it. :( Other metallic panelling like Alucobond, zinc or whatever metal panelling they are using on Mustard seed would be okay. I'm also giving it points for not being mustard/mocha/burgundy, etc...
^^^Agree the materials could make or break the look of this building. I honestly was expecting something more architecturally out there from the Germaine Group of hotels.
^But the alt brand has been pretty much what is pictured above or worse in Canada. It's trying to be something that is sort of funky post-industrial, but to me it is screaming I took a great old factory-window warehouse building and slapped some stone-stamped coloured concrete on it and got this. It's not hideous, but I don't really like it much.
I like the windows.

Where is this going again?

considering le germain ended up with some of the best "materials" of the last cycle, I have faith this project will be a sleeper hit.
I voted it down but only because its a boutique hotel rather than something from the global chain hotels (Hilton, Marriott, Starwood, Accor, etc). Calgary needs more full service hotels in the downtown core and the Alt Hotels competes for the same clientele.
Hey man, if they can actually get their shit together and get shovels in the ground, which no other hotel project seems to be able to accomplish, than I say all the power to them. Lame design, but at least it's a hotel.
This really really depends on the material. I'd like to see some matte stone or metal, personally.

I voted "like it". It's nothing special design-wise but a good use for the corner. This would be a hit nearly anywhere else in the city. |
I think I need a few more angles before I can decide for sure.
Very Euro. I like it a lot.

Belongs at the Airport! I know, I've said it before!

Is this getting built in the lot directly east of First?
I just realized that this design will be a twin for Calgary. It looks just like the Marlborough Inn!

You gotta give him some troll points there though!

Interestingly, when you look at large sized banquet halls in the city, they are limited to: - Hyatt - Westin - Palomino Room - Red & White Club - Coast Plaza (the Marlborough Inn) And in fact the Coast Plaza is much better than the Red & White. Too bad Alt won't have facilities like that. |

With this... Vinyl siding will do!
I kind of like this one.

I'm not lovin' this design for the Alt but it's marginally better that the EV Hilton going up - that thing is a fail.
does anyone know where its supposed to be built?

Will start construction in 2016. |

I recall seeing an ALT Hotel by Pearson Airport in Toronto last year with a similar design and colour. I can't remember what the materials were in detail but I do remember that it didn't look that bad. Nothing mind blowing but not cheap.
I assume this will be THE hotel to be at in the summers when there's the Fort Calgary concerts (Bigtime's favourite time of the year!)
I wouldn't be surprised to see the white parts done in brick. This is supposed to be a "loft" style hotel afterall, so they may want to go with that motif.
