Calgary Indy?

With Octane Motorsports officially ending the Edmonton Indy, how likely will Calgary host the annual event at Airdrie's new racetrack?

http://metronews.ca/news/edmonton/378999/octane-motorsports-pulls-out-of-2013-edmonton-indy/

Policy Wonk Sep 22, 2012 1:15 AM

That combined racetrack/airfield is years away, if there is even anything to it. I know some people in the corporate aviation area don't take the project backers terribly seriously.

It is unfortunate Edmonton couldn't run with this.

Bigtime Sep 22, 2012 1:51 PM

Count me in with Policy Wonk on the skepticism of the Airdrie track and corporate airport becoming a reality in the short term.

Is there anywhere in Calgary where this could be hosted?

Roadcourse!!!

Incidentally, there's a local fellow in the process of purchasing an Indy team, though I doubt that would have much affect on a race coming here.

Any particular reason the aviation folks aren't taking the backer of the corporate airport / race track seriously? There are some big boys involved. That being said, they're funding model for the motorsports portion was stupid.

Calgarian Sep 22, 2012 3:56 PM

Someone said a while back that there was a plan to build a road course using grandstand and the roads around there, not sure how that would work. Would be super cool to have the Indy here, I seriously doubt it will happen.

Coldrsx Sep 22, 2012 6:59 PM

Keep in mind that Edmonton has a new 2.7 km track just finishing paving out at castrol.

artvandelay Sep 23, 2012 6:58 AM

I'm not an auto racing fan, but I would check out a race if they held one in the city. The current date for Edmonton's race is the week after Stampede, so I doubt that would work very well. Corporate promotional budgets, in addition to people's wallets and livers, are not it good shape at that particular time.

A sporting event I would really love to see (and I think would be very successful) would be a proper PGA Tour stop. Although according to the RCGA there are no courses in Southern Alberta that are sufficiently difficult, which is B.S. in my opinion.

Wooster Sep 23, 2012 4:53 PM

I too would love to see a PGA tour event here. Unlikely, but I know the RCGA has been thinking about including an Alberta course as part of the Canadian Open rotation. Problem with that tournament is that it is currently the week after the British Open and in the middle of the busiest stretch of significant tournaments in the season - as a result most of the top players take the week off. I'm also trying to think of what course in the Calgary area is suitable for a PGA tour stop. Glencoe? Priddis? Not sure. I had heard the RCGA was potentially looking at a brand new top end course for the region that could fit the bill.

DoubleK Sep 25, 2012 6:07 PM

Calgary needs a dirt or paved oval track. It's a crying shame that a city of 1 million people has no form of grass roots motorsports. (Karting doesn't count).

GoflamesGo Sep 25, 2012 6:17 PM

What if they had the course somewhere around downtown, maybe memorial and riverfront ave? Also hosting it right after the stampede parade.

That would be pretty damn cool (and scenic too). However if they did do that I would complain like a mad man about shutting down all the lanes of memorial for it, especially after all the whining and complaining about closing 2 of 4 lanes for the Bow flow. I'd do it just to be a complete jackass and get over all those haters.

Big difference between an Indy race that would attract 10's of thousands and a smelly hippy parade attended by 10's of people. :jester:

Those same people would complain that their Memorial Drive was closed anyway, regardless of if it's the Bow River Flow or a Calgary Indy.

Best of luck guys
----

QMI Agency has learned a group of Calgary businessmen is in the process of
starting construction on a purpose-built road course track north of the city
that would be ready for racing by the 2015 season.

Ric Peterson, CEO of Oculus Transport Ltd., in Calgary, who this season
became an equity partner in Schmidt Peterson Motorsports in the IndyCar
series, said on Friday he is part of that group in serious talks to bring an
IndyCar race back to Alberta.

"I would really like to see a race in Calgary and I think we can get there,"
Peterson said.

"There are some people - who are here in St. Petersburg this weekend - who
are very close to putting together a purposebuilt road course just north of
Calgary, which would have great access to the airport, lots of hotels and a
freeway so it would be a great place to have a race."

He said the group is well on its way, with both planning and financing, to
get the deal done.

"Hopefully, by 2015, we could put a race in Calgary," Peterson said.

And he has the support of James Hinchcliffe, the 26-year-old Canadian behind
the wheel of the No. 27 Andretti Autosport Chevrolet.

"This is a tremendous idea," Hinchcliffe said. "It is gutting that we have
only one race in Canada."

He said the previous IndyCar forays into the west showed it can be
successful.

"Western Canada loves racing and I think there is a huge market for it so if
this all happens and we can get a proper permanent road course up there and
get IndyCar in Calgary it will be great."

What Peterson has that the failed Edmonton Indy promoters did not have is a
solid business connection to Alberta.

Besides his oil field services company, Peterson serves on the Board of
Directors for Horizon North Logistics Inc., Canyon Services Group, and
CanAir Nitrogen.

And he said Calgary's corporate culture is much stronger than that in
Edmonton.

"I think it would do corporately a whole lot better than Edmonton because of
all the head offices in Calgary," Peterson said. "Calgary would have much
more potential to sell a title sponsorship and corporate suites."

There have been previous efforts to bring IndyCar of Calgary - mostly aimed
at a temporary street course around the Stampede grounds.

This new group dismissed using the Stampede area for the race because of
logistic problems.

Peterson did say the race would have to, however, find a date that would not
conflict with the annual downtown event.

"With the Stampede we would have to be careful with the timing of the race,
but I don't think that will be an issue," he said.

GoflamesGo Apr 8, 2013 7:34 AM

So the track would be the proposed track near cross iron?

BIMBAM Apr 8, 2013 7:55 AM

Just a complete hypothetical here: if Calgary could manage to get a Grand Prix race, do you think it would be more or less successful then an Indy race? I know it's not exactly in the cards, but I was just wondering, considering the poor turnout at some of the international Grand Prix races, that it might be possible for Calgary to win one (that, and I prefer Grand Prix to Indy).

I think a GP would have a higher attendance but I'm not sure if it would be more successful as an Indy race would need a lower attendance to be considered a success than a GP. A GP would be better attended but I'd be skeptical if it would be well attended enough. It would be wicked to see a GP race in Calgary.

I'd try to go to an Indy race but would deffo be there for a GP. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll see one any time soon as F1 is so political and money driven these days.

Proposed motorsports park in Rocky View County moving forward

Application for approval to be filed this week

CALGARY - A $65-70 million motorsport project, east of Airdrie in Rocky View County, is taking a giant step forward this week when the company behind the development files an application for approval.

Rockyview Motorsports Park is proposing a world-class driving course and driver training facility, just northeast of the city of Airdrie, on about 258 hectares of land.

“From a planning perspective, we have a full master plan completed. We have all of the detailed work required to go into a planning application completed and we expect to file the application with the county this week,” Dominic Young, president and chief executive of Rockyview Motorsports Park, told the Herald.

“From a financing perspective, we have about $9 million in committed capital. We would have additional capital raised and we have specific plans as to how that will be carried out following the approvals. We hope to get our approvals this calendar year and we would hope then that we could have the first shovel in the ground so to speak early spring 2015 and most of our construction would be done through 2015.”

In addition to a world-class European driving course of four kilometres with the potential to extend to 5.3 kilometres, the facility will also include a one-of-a-kind driving centre, Calgary Police Service driving training centre, skills pad, indoor/outdoor kart facility, Olds College research project to enhance wetlands and improve agriculture, auto-oriented services, car condos and recreational facilities.

On full build out, it would create 100 jobs.

Recently, the project was presented to Rocky View County’s Policy and Priority Committee, which came into effect last fall. It is the combination of two previous committees (Public Services and Infrastructure and Operations). With this new committee, the County says council can dedicate the time needed to investigate new issues, hear general presentations from members of the public and consider matters involving construction, maintenance, or County facilities. All Councillors sit on the Policy and Priority Committee, which meets in public about 10 times a year.

David Kalinchuk, economic development manager of Rocky View County, said “the great thing about a great idea is it receives a lot of attention from a lot of different groups.”

“This is one of several groups I’ve worked with over the years that have had a dream of having something just like this. This is much better because it’s so inclusive. It has so many different elements,” said Kalinchuk.

“I think the quality, the depth and breadth of the team, is reflected in the quality of the proposal. That’s just great for Rocky View. It’s great for the region. It’s going to be great for all the economic spinoff that comes from foodservices, hotels, the motorsports, the tire guys and the detailing guys. All that kind of stuff and then for the regional tourism . . . it’s one of those amenities we can showcase in the future. It’s all coming together which is really nice to see.”

Young said the core facility revolves around the European-style road course which is designed to be safe for all users.

“Equally important, the facility is intended to become the new home for the Calgary Police Service officer driver training school,” said Young. “Then we want to build out a road safety training centre. This is the kind of facility that would have a number of components to it that would entail slippery surfaces and would teach drivers what happens when their cars are put into a skid situation and how to rectify those situations. A lot of information about vehicles themselves. Under steering. Over steering. Anticipating and the ability to respond to emergency situations

What Indy? Just because Edmonton lost their date doesn't mean a 2014 or 201 date is being held for Alberta and it would appear that Sonoma, California has that weekend locked up for this season.

A local Indy Car team owner is keen on getting a race here. Indy was always pleased with the event in Edmonton, and casual talks have been warmly received.

Appropriate track length, corners including a near hairpin, elevation changes and straights for passing. Pits on Stampede grounds, two LRT stops inside of the track, pedestrian +15 access to infield at two points, multiple spectator viewing options.

4km, which is longer than most:

About 2.7km long, could utilize BMO Centre and such as garage/team viewing areas.

It's interesting to read the comments about F1 made in jest. I was going to jokingly say something as I've taken a liking to F1 so it's good to see a bit of local interest in it.

The mock circuits look pretty cool. I'd think Fuzz's would be more likely as it has more bends and turns. As much as I like going flat out, speedog's loyalty to his name betrayed his circuit's chances.

F1 anywhere else in Canada won't ever happen, ever.

Indy in Calgary would be nice, but let me pitch this to you folk... Formula E.

1. Good new series
2. Good environmental story for AB/YYC
3. Global exposure
4. 'The way of the future'
5. More likely to accept a unique track in YYC

I love cars, racing, but Indy has lost its mojo, that being CHAMP:)

Fuzz Dec 8, 2015 4:42 PM

I'd be happy with Formula E, but this season they are doing about half as many races. I'm not sure why. But ya, they use shorter tracks without hills, so the Stampede grounds would be ideal. They are also adding Autonomous Formula E next year as a pre-race which is going to be really fun to watch. It would be interesting to have all electric racing in an oil town! Good idea!

Formula E loop, 2.3km. Doesn't block pedestrian access to the grandstands, provides fan access via walkway to Saddledome. Let's do this.
