No it isn't. This is a stunning building

Nothing about this building is stunning. Proportions are off, facade is blasé, and it's far too similar to its immediate neighbors.... not to mention the anticlimactic view down the river (a sheer glass rectangle). Frankly it would work better as a filler building for a random corner in the Loop to replace a parking garage, not a landmark structure bolstering a central and historical point in the city with guaranteed visibility by millions of residents and visitors.

Zapatan Jan 14, 2023 3:51 AM

I wouldn't call it stunning but it's not that bad. It's a decent tower with a decent height but Chicago deserved better.

On a side note that color glass on those buildings is great.

I'm squinting, but do I see the Municipal Symbol on the ground by the river? Very cool but still wish it was a fountain like originally planned.

bhawk66 Jan 14, 2023 2:17 PM

I'm looking forward to when the base (full column height) gets finished and lit up at night. At ground level it should be rather "stunning" with the full height glass lobby lit up as well. And the polished stainless steel columns won't look too shabby in the day time either.

Should a nice addition for when the tour boats swing by.

Not exactly what you wanted, but this is the view from Lasalle bridge last night:

Also, yes, it is the municipal symbol in the plaza below. The view from down there is really cool at night -- water basically 270 degrees around you and huge buildings on all sides.

And just as a reminder of what the confluence looked like a few years ago, a painting from inside the Federal Reserve:

twister244 Jan 14, 2023 5:32 PM

There was supposed to be crown lighting beyond the logo, no? Or has that not been activated yet?

GeneralLeeTPHLS Jan 14, 2023 6:01 PM

It's a pretty decent building, but it's just too similar to it's neighbours. I know Po-mo can be overdone, but some precast sections might've been helpful in leveraging more out of this design. 850 feet is huge nonetheless.

This. The tower itself is fine. 7/10. But it's completely undeserving of its location and prominent visibility.

That said, its going to be here for the next 100+ years, so not much we can do about it now. At least its blocks the Apparel Center :haha:

marothisu Jan 14, 2023 9:21 PM

I have a view of the tower from my office and the sign. I think they finally figured that part out - sign looks pretty good atop of the tower. Agree with others - I'd give it a solid 7/10. It's a nice addition. Nothing too crazy but it's not bad.

TWeb Jan 15, 2023 4:12 PM

What is going on with the brightness of this sign? Compared to BMO or BoA this one is significantly more obnoxious at night. I hope they have plans to further activate the entire crown with unique lightning because as is this is just an overlit and oversized billboard that adds to the mediocrity of this building.

It is super-bright. I like it. I wish it set a benchmark for other illumination and other buildings stepped-up rather than this being dimmed-down. I agree that it would be nice if they activated the rest of the crown (maybe in a contrasting [to the white of the name] programmable colored lighting).

Birds aren't real.....

So - Is that it for lighting? A massive bat signal? I thought those vertical strips on the crown were going to be lit up?

PittsburghPA Jan 19, 2023 1:54 AM

it is to WPE as Kenny Rogers Roaster was to Kramer's apartment

TWeb Jan 19, 2023 7:13 PM

At the request of Ald Reilly, work was done yesterday afternoon to dim the brightness and it appeared much less bright last night. Maybe complaining about this means I'm now veering into NIMBY territory, but I just had zero interest in being distracted while in any room of my condo by a corporate logo at full brightness all night long. The sign now appears more in line with the brightness of Chase or BMO signs.

Hopefully now they treat the setbacks and crown right with some impressive uplighting so the building stands out in a good way at night.

PittsburghPA Jan 20, 2023 8:57 PM

I drove past last night and they definitely dimmed it considerably. I'm not sure how I feel about the sign. I heard from someone on site that the scalloped panels will be lit so hopefully it'll look cohesive.

Didn't someone Photoshop the Eye of Sauron onto the top of their building in San Francisco (or maybe they did it themselves for Halloween)?

This is that.

Yeah, there was a petition circulating calling for the Eye of Sauron for Halloween 2018. The company at first nixed the idea, but then did it anyway. SF nerds rejoiced.

They are still doing a video wall in the lobby too... news reports were unclear if that made it into the final plans, but it sure looks like they are roughing in for big video panels in BVic's post from November:

These are designed to be visible from the Orleans bridge, and should complement the Art on the Mart nicely.

Interesting how much faster Salesforce seems to be building out their floors -- the top and bottom -- compared to Kirkland, who's still expecting a year before they're finished.

Anything tall built on The lot at halsted lake and Fulton would also feature prominently

The Blue Line actually runs under the River Point tower - it veers to the north side of Lake St to avoid the bridge caissons.

I assume any new tower on that lot west of River Point would be pushed to the north, to get some river corridor views over Gibsons, with a plaza or lowrise section at the southern tip where the CTA tunnel runs underneath.

proportions out of whack, the scalloped crown from the west doesn't appear balanced, no cohesion and even the relationship to the shorter "twin" is unconvincingly resolved. fully confess to being guilty of beating a dead horse here, but this tower consistently finds new ways to disappoint.

one of the highest-profile missed opportunities in the history of Chicago skyscraper architecture.

IMHO.

I walk by this building 4-6 times a week and man is it disappointing they didn't go a few hundred feet taller. I know, money and time were the factors here, but just 20 extra floors would have really made this building feel like it does this site justice. At least it's decent looking building I guess. And I guess we should be thankful they didn't go shorter.
