Thanks Godzilla
You're right! Hopefully your hopes will be realised. Getting there by small degrees. This is the rear of 321 E. 3rd Street as seen in the film The Star Chamber, released in August 1983. https://i.imgur.com/7Y7GihW.jpeg archive.org - The Star Chamber https://i.imgur.com/OWdAObF.jpeg In this second capture you can see a portion of the lower rear windows just to the right of Michael Douglas. https://i.imgur.com/jRbBE4c.jpeg archive.org - The Star Chamber Production and shooting apparently began in May 1982 so these shots likely come from a time that Peter Ivers was living in the building. You can search on IMDB for other E. 3rd Street film and TV locations from the 1970s/early 80s. You never know, T. J. Hooker or Jim Rockford might come up trumps for you. |

Well this is what works for me Scott Charles. :) Advanced Search - https://www.imdb.com/search/title/ Expand the "Page topics" filter and choose "Locations" in the "Search within topic" box. Then enter your location search queries in the box below that. https://i.imgur.com/fpycsUg.jpeg You can set a time range under "Release date" and any other filters you may want. Hit Enter. |
Noir_Noir, I cannot believe you found that! I honestly cannot express how thankful I am. That is exactly how the building would have looked when Peter Ivers lived there (as you said), and it has surpassed my expectations. It looks even seedier than I imagined (and I imagined it looked pretty sleazy!).
I'm not sure what poor Peter was thinking living there at that time. Anyone with bad intentions would have seen him coming a mile away! Also - thanks for the imdb tip. Funny enough, in the past when I was searching for old pictures and information about a DTLA building I found from imdb it was used in an old episode of Hill Street Blues. It was the Holland Hotel on 7th St. I've noticed lots of cool shots of DTLA in Hunter, TJ Hooker and wow are there ever a lot in Baretta! Thank you again for finding these amazing pics of Peter's old building, you've made my day. |

Where was Eric Campbell going at 4:30AM? According to the report, an inebriated Campbell had presumably left the Vernon County Club. His vehicle was traveling east on Wilshire in the oncoming lane at or near Vermont Ave. when the fatal accident occurred. His vehicle collided with a vehicle operated by W.A. Hollenbeck (of 1620 Maltman Avenue) ¶“Hollenbeck’s car was struck on the rear end by Campbell’s auto and both machines turned over. With Mr. Campbell was Miss Jean Crosby of 1207 Maryland Avenue and H.L.Schneiders of No. 1120 West Sixth Street. Both were thrown from the machine and severely cut and bruised.” “All of the injured party were treated at the Receiving Hospital by Police Surgeon Zorb.” Another news report states: “Miss Jean Crosby, motion picture actress; left arm crushed and internal injuries. Harold Schneiders, magazine and scenario writer; sprained knee, seven ribs fractured.” Still another report references "three women in the car with the actor." Including "Gene" Crosby of Brooklyn. https://secure-images.rarenewspapers...1/image087.jpghttps://secure-images.rarenewspapers...1/image087.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/bl...h630-p-k-no-nuhttps://lh3.googleusercontent.com/bl...h630-p-k-no-nu https://www.cable-car-guy.com/images...180112_001.jpghttps://www.cable-car-guy.com/images...180112_001.jpg Not that it would have prevented the accident, but was in 1917, was Wilshire and Vermont fully paved? Were there any traffic controls? Campbell was reportedly living in downtown LA at the LA Athletic Club. News reports differ as to the number of passengers in Campbell's vehicle, two, three or more? Was Jean/Gene Crosby’s residence in LA or Glendale - or Brooklyn? Schneiders’ residence was evidently in LA. Was Campbell dropping them off, or was this a traveling event? "Evidently," per the image below and its source, Miss Crosby had some Chaplin connection and she continued to act, post accident. Hiccup. Williams, Jr.) started life in Cleveland, Ohio but in 1918 his family moved to Black section of Los Angeles. By the 1940s Dootsie was the leader of the local Harlem Dukes Band & also part of Andy Kirk’s band. In 1951 Dootsie founded Dootone Records on the front porch of his family’s house at 9512 South Central Ave. Dootone hit pay dirt with a demo recording by the Penguins, a group of kids from Jefferson High School. The song was Earth Angel, written by one of the kids, and it became an instant hit when the demo was played on local radio. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...370&fit=bounds In 1957 Dootsie changed the name of his label to Dooto Records to avoid a lawsuit from Duo-Tone Records. The mid-1950s brought another major change to Dootsie’s record company when he signed a young comedian named Redd Foxx to a long term contract, releasing more than 50 LPs of Foxx’s risque comedy routines plus a slew of other releases of Black comedians performing similar “blue” material. Foxx eventually left Dootsie when he was cast in the Norman Lear TV series Sanford & Son but that didn’t stop Dootsie from re-releasing Foxx’s material to capitalize on the comedian’s crossover popularity.... https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds In 1962 Williams entered a new era of his entrepreneurship when he created the Dooto Music Center at 13440 S Central Ave.... https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...720&fit=bounds At that time the Chicago Defender called Dooto Records “the largest Negro-owned record label long before Motown was ever dreamed of” such an empire. Williams championed the “wealth of talent” among black people & had aspirations to branch into movies and more. The Dooto Center had a 1000 seat auditorium, recording studio and was able to broadcast live boxing events. Dooto Records stopped releasing vinyl in 1975 but Dootsie Williams remained active in the Black community of Los Angeles until his death in 1991. I've just caught up after quite a long time (a couple years? not sure) away from the thread, and I just wanted to say thank you to all the folks who have continued to post and keep this thread alive and interesting!
I haven't got anything new to post right now, but here's an oldy that was posted here by e_r back in 2011. I hope that's long enough ago that a repeat is ok. There is a copy at Water and Power Associates as well. The carriage is the Lafayette Hotel Stage, and we are looking north on Los Angeles Street (or Calle de la Zanja) south of the Plaza in the 1870s, possibly 1871: https://i.imgur.com/Sxyw1RJ.jpg On the left is the Arcadia Block (1859-1927); the Coronel Adobe is ahead, on the other side of the empty area known as Broad Place. The street to the right is Calle de los Negros. Peeking up above the right side of the Coronel Adobe is the south end of the Lugo House, and a large tree (probably on the plaza) can be seen above the left end of the adobe, partially blocked from view by the Arcadia Block. |
.
Welcome back, ProphetM. :) Here's a supermarket we haven't seen often (if ever) on NLA. Seller's description:.."CA California LA Los Angeles Alexander’s Market Grocery Store 35 MM Slide Photo" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/OfaldA.jpg eBay Does anyone recognize this location? . |
.
Here's another mystery location slide from the same eBay seller. "https://www.ebay.com/itm/31517300024...oAAOSwJTdl1tdY" https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/CFOsJv.jpg Despite the rooftop sign this one might be bit more difficult to solve. Go forth! :whip: minions. . |

https://maps.app.goo.gl/fkeJtPMCc6dMNh9n8 (The link above is in the parking lot inside the pony wall, because the street-based views are badly blocked by trees, buses, and homeless encampments on the sidewalk.) I found a list of 1967 and 1970 Alexander's locations on this site: https://www.groceteria.ca/board/view...hp?f=27&t=1192 I went through them all - most buildings are still there, and one of them has a tall sign like the one in the old photo (273 E. Gladstone, Azusa), but the one on Vermont seems to be the best match, with a short pony wall at the sidewalk and a high hill behind it (the Hollyhock House and grounds), which is *maybe* on the old photo - it's dark back there but it looks like a building or retaining wall on the left and a building poking up above the market on the right. |

And only maybe. |

Nice work with deciphering the sign ProphetM, which led to the Lonsdale Apts. which led to this possibility. At the bottom of the picture you can see part of an arrow sign for "Los Angeles Wallpaper". https://i.imgur.com/ZXdmqYZ.jpeg rescarta.lapl.org The first listing I see in the directories for the Lonsdale is 1930. Demolished in 1968. I cannot locate a mention or picture in this thread so far. |

The Los Angeles Wallpaper ad looks like it's on a bus bench to me, and I'm not sure that is an arrow on the right hand side. If it is pointing to the right, I would think that it is pointing to an address on Wilshire Blvd., not on Serrano. |
