In Martin Turnbull's second picture on the right you can see some Spanish arches, which look like the lawn bowling clubhouse

Thanks for that!
Follow up question: What are Spanish arches and how do they differ from regular arches?

You're welcome.
I thought they looked liked mission revival. I guess you can compare Gothic arches, Moorish arches and Norman arches as well

That's how I found the photo of the California State Exposition Building. I reverse image searched the photos of the Wonder Bread truck, leading to the Dick Whittington photos at the USC library. One badly damaged set of his photos showed lawn bowlers with this arched building in the background, and what looked like the building behind the bread truck too, but it was hard to tell, so I searched for better photos of Exposition Park and voila!

I don't had access to newspapers.com, but the picture above appeared in the May 4th, 1960 edition of the Bakersfield Californian - you can see it in the top-right corner of the thumbnail here. An 8-lane road was opening on August 1st, so I guess the picture was taken during construction.

It could be for a dogfish. :)

Even though this photograph is a reprint I don't believe we have seen it on NLA. (I typed EXCELSIOR in the search feature- & nothing showed up)

Is anyone familiar with Excelsior Village in the Garden Grove area?

Can anyone make out the street on the sign at the right. Developmemnt must be nearby. There is an Excelsior Elementary School in Garden Grove. Might be same neighborhood.

stanklem, the eBay seller seems to think the intersection is Taft and Westminster Ave.

It's a T intersection so we have to be looking west to match the old photo.

Is this near Excelsior Elementary?

I think you're in the right area. Someone on Reddit has done a comparison of Westminster Avenue at Brookhurst Street, Garden Grove in 1957 and 2011. You can see an Excelsior Village sign in the earlier image - see here.

Hoss, here's that 1957 Westminster Ave. and Brookhurst St. photograph that you mentioned with the yellow Excelsior Village sign.

There was still a gas station on that spot as recently as 2014. It's gone now. GSV

The "Hotel & Apts" building is still standing at 55 N Venice Boulevard, but I don't recognize any of the others. I'd guess that the photographer was right down near the beach by Ocean Front Walk.

I found a build date of 1927 for the apartment building, and name King Apartments in the late 1920s and 1930s.

Could that be "Surfridge" in the background? I cant really think of another area south of venice that's similar.

The ramps are next to the Playa Del Rey Beach restrooms. The community in the background is gone, it is now the LAX Dunes Restoration.

Also, a floating barstool?...why is that there?

Is it advertised on a sign?
