Stockholm orders more CAF trams

SWEDEN: Stockholm transport authority Storstockholms Lokaltrafik has exercised an option for a further eight trams from CAF.

In late 2010 CAF won a firm order to supply 15 trams from its Urbos family to Stockholm. SL subsequently ordered seven more, and all 22 are now in service

...

The tram in the picture is a longer version tho, running on Lidingöbanan. iirc those are 4-section trams running as singles usually whereas the 3-section ones are usually coupled in pairs.

UPDATE:

Tvärbanan is once again open since this morning. They've added some switches and a couple of side-tracks so trains can turn back at more places and replaced the old signalling system with the "new" one (that's finally good enough) so now the trams can go the whole line in one go (no transfer needed at Alvik).
And added the extension from Sickla Udde to Sickla.

So far it seems to be working fine, we'll see how passenger numbers build back to "normal" and beyond quite soon.:)

Map from a few years ago. What's u/c or not is out of date, but these are the lines built, u/c and planned. pic from https://stockholmiana.wordpress.com/, originally from SL

Tvärbanan is a Light Rail Line that has some street running sections. It was somewhat controversial when it was built and some said almost no-one would use it and the parking it removed from one neighborhood would kill the local shops. Of course, that didn't happen. Very successful and has lifted that neighborhood to near inner-city level.

History:
2000-01-08 Liljeholmen - Gullmarsplan (central part of the green section, the ends have transfers to the Red and Green subway lines, respectively)
2000-06-01 Liljeholmen - Alvik (western part of green section, connecting to the Green subway line on the other side of the Inner City from the one at Gullmarsplan as well as to the old suburban Nockebybanan tram line)
2002-08-14 Gullmarsplan - Sickla Udde (giving vastly better transit options to the Hammarby Sjöstad re-development area)
2006-01-09 new transfer to commuter rail at Årstaberg (existing Tvärbanan stop, new commuter rail station just for that transfer)
North expansion that is still in 2016 not thru-running with the old section(!):
2013-10-28 Alvik - Solna Centrum (transfer to the Blue subway and to commuter rail at Sundbyberg, to the other branch of the Blue line at SolnaC)
2014-08-18 Solna Centrum - Solna Station(transfer to the other northern branch of the commuter rail)
Currently under construction:
2017? Sickla Udde - Sickla Station (will connect to Saltsjöbanan, a sorta LRT-ish commuter rail-ish line)
Planned:
Norra Ulvsunda - Helelund (transfers to both branches of the Blue line and ending with a transfer to commuter rail)

Alvik - Sickla Udde 11.5 km & 17 stops
Alvik - Solna Station 6.7 km & 8 stops
i.e. SolnaS - SicklaU 17.2 km & 25 stops
Extension to Sickla Station is under a km and 1 stop.
i.e. SolnaS - SicklaS 18 km & 26 stops.

Passenger numbers (per normal weekday):
2005: . 32 000
2007: . 44 000
2012: . 57 700
2014: . 62 000 for the main part, 13 000 for the northern part
2018: 110 000 for the whole line finally with thru-running and with the Sickla Station expansion.

The on-going f***-up that is the new signalling system was supposed to take about a year to get operational on the new northern extension. so was supposed to work after summer 2014. Still does not work. F*** GE and f*** the incompetence at SL that made the specs for the system. Hopefully it'll all work after summer 2017, when we might also see the Sickla Station extension go into service.

Yesterday the extension of the #7 tram to T-centralen opened! Finally the tram has a direct connection with the subway.

A couple of pictures to show the transformation:

6 months later, here's another update:

The ceremonial first blast for the extension of the Blue subway line from Akalla to Barkarby was this Monday (2019-03-04).
https://www.stockholmdirekt.se/nyhet...z4UX8MCF6wcKw/ (in Swedish only)

It's only two stations, but will both connect a new built area Barkarbystaden that is fairly well made, urban and dense, and end at the commuter rail station Barkarby (which just got a total make-over with the new subway connection and a new better bus terminal in mind, while being part of a foutracking of the line)

Barkarbystaden:

Some sneaky construction of the Blue line southwards extension has been made because it connects directly to an office & residential development:

What will the non-subway development look like?
It's the red high-rise and the red wavy low-rise plus the other non-industrial buildings along the edges of that same block.

Construction of Tvärbanan LRT branch to Kista/Helenelund is also under way now.
https://www.svt.se/nyheter/lokalt/st...har-ska-den-ga (in Swedish only, again)
The line will end at Helendelund (commuter rail station) and go by way of the Blue line Subway stations Rissne and Kista (one on each branch of the Blue line) and also have a stop right by Bromma Airport (mostly domestic flights, hopefully will torn down when current contracts end in 2038).

One section of elevated structure was completed earlier since it might be a lot more difficult to build at the same time as the rest of the line due to another construction project right next door.

A few renders from Region Stockholm (the County Council Authority [Landsting] and County [Län] were merged at newyears into a "Region") of the rest of the line:

A bus exploded yesterday in central Stockholm. No passengers on board and the driver was reportedly not seriously injured.
The bus had passed by several warning signs and drove into a beam protecting a too-low-for-the-bus tunnel entrance. This collision punctured (and possibly deformed) the CNG tanks on top, which then created an explosion.

I was googling about the Sickla transfer between the metro, lightrail, and saltsjobanan, and saw that at some point there was a plan to actually convert the Saltsjobanan to light rail and connect it to the Tvarbanan. What ever happened to that idea, did it die?

Swede Mar 12, 2019 9:43 PM

Yeah, it died. Iirc the plan lacked funding and political support. So it fizzled out and instead we got the extension to Sickla a year and a half ago. IMO it was good it didn't happen. Better to have Tvärbanan free to go over or under the water to Djurgården/Ropsten, and Saltsjöbanan still would be possible to double track to a far greater extent and my personal ultimate dream for it would be to have it not go to Slussen but instead in a new tunnel under Folkungagatan and have interchange stations with the Blue & Green subway lines, Commuter Rail and then turn a bit north to have and interchange with the Red subway line at Hornstull (and possibly head northwest from there).

A press event was held yesterday showing the new C30 subway cars to the press.

Four years later, time to drop an update on the progress with the new subway extensions!

First the Green lines new "Yellow" branch. Station caves taking shape.
https://www.skyscrapercity.com/cdn-c...7-png.4492660/

The expansion of the subway yard in Högdalen, and the new connecting track to the Farsta-branch which will mean the yard connects to both the Green and Blue line after the Hagsätra branch turns Blue. IMO this lacks a connecting track to the mainline railway shortly south of the yard, would create the first direct track connection to the subway from the mainlines (existing connection is via a LRT line & some very old freight tracks).

Blue line southern extension, eastern (brand new!) branch to Nacka.

Finally the northwestern extension of the Blue line, all major blasting is now done!
