NLA has become so big that who can remember all of the things posted on here!? (This is a good problem.) Someone should go through the forum and make an index of all the places and photos. :haha: I know that's :koko: but I thought I'd say it anyway! On the other hand, I guess some duplication isn't necessarily a bad thing depending on where the photos are sourced: Quote:

but that was some mighty fine sleuthing you did on that first cabinet card. (even if you were wrong off by a tiny bit. As always, I appreciate your help. Quote:
The windmill is huge! https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...924/S2qcOy.jpg DETAIL Unless it's a lot closer to the camera. (but it looks fairly close to the house) This is a bridge, right? Is it just going over a road...or is there a stream as well? https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/fuxu3d.jpg DETAIL I am surprised by how wide it is...especially for the late 1880s. __ |

I was watching the Spade Cooley show on TV one afternoon, when my grandfather walked me up to the Pumpkin to buy me some rope to teach me how to make a lariat. Albin's Drugs was on the corner where Porto's is today and Albin's Hobbies and Toys was where the Train Shack is now. I recall when they opened the California Theatre and when they closed the Magnolia Theatre, both on Magnolia Boulevard. |
Does anyone know where silent film star Louise Brooks lived?
I came across several photographs of her- that were taken at her home, and in her backyard, in 1925. I'll start with this one. (they get more interesting as I go along) note the wrought iron lamp https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...922/8fzhVL.jpg fromthebygone Louise having tea with her younger sister, June. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...921/xWvw8D.jpg fromthebygone I find the next two photos especially intriguing becase of the ornamental 'garden', that was constructed around a small group of trees in her backyard. I don't believe I have ever seen anything quite like it. It's almost like a little stage. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/cRhX1F.jpg fromthebygone If you ask me (and you didn't), the poor trees seem a bit confined. I wonder if something like this is detrimental to the trees? (Yoo Hoo, odinthor) This one is my favorite. A regal spot for a photograph. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/1...923/bZodtL.jpg fromthebygone If we're able to figure out where she lived [at least in 1925], I thought it'd be fun to to snoop around the property [via google_earth] and see if this strange garden feature is still intact. __ Louise Brooks, as LuLu, in her most famous film, Pandora's Box. R. M. Widney [attorney] is listed, with scant details, in the 1875 Southern California Directory. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/sFxKH0.jpg lapl By 1887-88 he has become a judge, the president of the University Bank of Los Angeles, and a real estate dealer living at 310 S. Olive Street. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...924/H12Sfz.jpg lapl There are quite a few more Widneys listed in the 1894 L.A. Directory. R. M. is still the president of the bank, but has moved to 416 S. Olive St. https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/8...921/Hm1rSF.jpg I didn't find any indication that he owned a street car 'railroad'. I'll keep looking. __ |
Louise Brooks, Helen Twelvetrees, Laurel Canyon
Quote:
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4871/...fee17b0a_c.jpg Louise Brooks Stone Throne by Kimberly, on Flickr There are tons more photos on the blog. It's broken down in 4 parts. Unfortunately all of the text is small and embedded in images. Part 1: http://louisebrookssociety.blogspot....n-home-of.html Part 2: http://louisebrookssociety.blogspot....ome-of_12.html Part 3: http://louisebrookssociety.blogspot....ome-of_13.html Part 4: http://louisebrookssociety.blogspot....ome-of_14.html More googling led me to an undated page for a property in Laurel Canyon named "Twelvetrees", also without an address. It appears to be the same place judging by the staircase photo within. It has been painted but appears to be the same one. This property page says they restored the home, and the photos appear to be quite a few years old. http://www.jamanproperties.com/twelvetrees.html So, I have found the house, but not the address! I know the sleuths here will find it. |

http://www.documentaryofalostgirl.co...of-a-lost-girl And then I found Movieland directory that says at one time Louise lived at 366 Laurel Canyon. If you read the Louise Brooks Society blog entries, it mentions the street was renumbered. If we dig up older maps maybe the renumbered address can be found. http://movielanddirectory.com/star.cfm?star=26953 |
Found it - it's 8110 Gould Avenue:

Either that, or Helen Twelvetrees owned houses on both sides of the same street. |

I also wondered about the other site allegedly owned by Helen Twelvetrees. Redfin puts it at 8125 Gould with a build date of 1959. She passed in 1958, so maybe this is on the right location but was torn down and rebuilt? |
As with Flickr monkeying around with their policies...

...in searching things on NLA I've recently discovered photos, like the one below, with new watermarks on them that were not there when originally posted: http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...e/newberry.jpg A search shows photobucket is up to some new tricks: Quote:

Also, E_R, in the first part of a post you made, do you know why the picture is NOT what you are describing? Just noticing a lot of weird things today.
