I love how the glass is a bit darker than all the blue glass around it. Nice touch.

Many architects and the developers that pay them meet this requirement in the most economically beneficial way by having only a very short (and almost always awkward) base that meets the property line while maximizing allowable square footage by building a shaft set back from the streetwall straight up so floorplates remain the same and floors are increased. This may make moderately taller structures on the side streets but destroys a very basic urban design tenet in the process, and in my opinion is a betrayal of the basic stewardship in guiding the building of the public realm the city is entrusted with.

For the unintended consequences, see this tower or virtually all new budget hotel towers in the West 30s as well as throughout the city.

A particularly horrific example.

^Good golly I hate pointless regulation. :hell:

One can only hope for a nice mural on the adjacent building.

Thank you for the background. If any people feel strongly about this - would be happy to organize and fight for a change here. It’s ridiculous.

I really like the dark curvy glass.
Just wished it would be a bit taller.

Pendry Manhattan West Hotel’s Wavy Curtain Wall Complete In Midtown West

https://newyorkyimby.com/wp-content/...3/IMG-3915.jpg

The wavy glass curtain wall is now fully installed on the northern and southern elevations of the 281-foot-tall Pendry Manhattan West Hotel, aka Four Manhattan West. Designed by Skidmore Owings & Merrill and developed by Brookfield Properties, the topped-out, 21-story building is part of Midtown’s Manhattan West master plan, which sits directly across Tenth Avenue from Hudson Yards. The Pendry will eventually yield a total of 164 guest rooms and a selection of condominiums on the upper floors.

The last major section of the building to be completed is uppermost portion above the flat roof parapet. Yellow-colored insulation boards can be seen wrapped around the curved top. Interiors should be well underway at this point.

The Manhattan West complex will be comprised of four new buildings, which includes the Pendry hotel, and an existing structure, Five Manhattan West. Formerly known as 450 West 33rd Street, Five Manhattan West has been reclad in glass to match the rest of its new siblings. The current largest undertaking is the construction of Two Manhattan West, which will top out at 58 stories and rise 935 feet tall. Though much smaller in scope than this, the Pendry’s undulating façade will make it stand out from the rest of the buildings in the five-million-square-foot Midtown development.

The closest subways are the 7 train to the west between Tenth and Eleventh Avenue at Hudson Yards, and the A, C, E, New Jersey Transit and Amtrak trains to the east at Pennsylvania Station.

Final Exterior Touches Underway For Pendry Manhattan West Hotel In Midtown West

https://newyorkyimby.com/wp-content/...5-777x1036.jpg

Quote:

Construction is nearing completion on the Pendry Manhattan West Hotel, a 281-foot-tall hotel at Four Manhattan West in Midtown West. Designed by Skidmore Owings & Merrill and developed by Brookfield Properties, the 21-story building is just one of five buildings in the Manhattan West master plan, which sits directly across Tenth Avenue from Hudson Yards. The Pendry Manhattan West Hotel will provide a total of 164 guest rooms and a selection of condominiums on the upper levels.

Exterior work is complete with the exception of two sections. One is where the exterior hoist on the western elevation is still attached. This will likely be disassembled later this summer once work wraps up on the interiors. The second is the rectangular enclosure for mechanical equipment on the top of the building, set back from the signature wavy façade. This section is still enveloped in yellow insulation boards and waterproofing.

The rest of the edifice appears externally finished with the additional exceptions of the ground floor on the northern side of the superstructure and the back side to the south, which will eventually open up to a public plaza and connect to the other four addresses in the Manhattan West complex.
Of all the new projects that have recently risen or been renovated in this rapidly expanding section of Manhattan, the Pendry Manhattan West Hotel offers the most unique and visually captivating appearance with its lively glass façade. The closest subways from the property are the 7 train to the west between Tenth and Eleventh Avenue at Hudson Yards, and the A, C, E, New Jersey Transit, and Amtrak trains to the east at Pennsylvania Station.

The Pendry Manhattan West Hotel is still expected to open in 2021.

This has turned out to be a beautiful complex (if you omit 3 Manhattan West).
