http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/3jGRza.jpg detail 'Dookie' looks pretty miserable in this photograph. I usually don't like to comment negatively on a person's appearance but the guy next to him with the bags under his eyes looks a bit nefarious as well. The man to the left of Louella could very well be a silent film star (he looks vaguely familiar) but I haven't been able to identify him. The lady in the lower right corner is the picture of health and beauty. Did anyone else notice the ridiculously tall candles? __ Here's Dookle and Louella many years later. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/kjzuz6.jpg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_...rry_martin.jpg |

'mystery' location.
"Unknown Woman and Boy" (and a snazzy automobile!) http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...921/w07Lya.jpg J.L. Ordaz at https://www.flickr.com/photos/java1888/13629549955/ Mr. Ordaz doesn't have a location but several comment have said it looks like Lo Angeles in the 1950s) -I agree. I believe this was taken at a wedding and the little boy with his eyes closed is obviously the ring-bearer.....and hating every minute of it. lol I believe if the photographer turned around there might be a church. Here's a closer look at the building down the street. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/JCQTCL.jpg detail If only we could read the 'cleaners' sign. Do prefix's on license give a clue? http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/640...921/PzDxB7.jpg Good luck sleuths! __ |
I think the young man to the left of Louella may be actor Ben Lyon (HELL'S ANGELS).
And I agree that's Ned Sparks. I was going to hazard that guess earlier but wasn't sure until you made the bigger enlargement. |

Wow, I hadn't noticed that HossC! Thank you (on this Thanksgiving Day) for pointing that out! ________ http://onset-hollywood.com/wp-conten...-locations.jpgOn Set Hollywoof The above photo is a screen shot from the new film Rules Don't Apply, which opened yesterday. It shows a car driving west down Hollywood Blvd. in 1958. (The movie takes place roughly from 1958 - 1964.) The car in the photo is in the film quite a lot. We can see a few locations spotlighted on NLA before. What kind of special effect do you think this is? Inserted car into actual footage, or recreated in a computer or what? I can't really tell myself. There are some scenes shot on location at various places in Hollywood, including: Northmere Apartments 1840 N Berendo St., Los Feliz Los Angeles, Ca Musso & Frank Grill 6667 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, Los Angeles, Ca RKO Studios (former) locations on Gower street, I am assuming Beverly Hills Hotel and Bungalows 9641 Sunset Boulevard, Beverly Hills, Ca The Apple Pan 10801 W Pico Blvd, Los Angeles, Ca Arrowhead Springs (a 69-room resort complete with hot springs and pool, set in the foothills of the San Bernardino National Forest) 24918 Arrowhead Springs Rd, San Bernardino, Ca YWCA Hollywood Studio Club 1215 Lodi Place, Hollywood, CA Also are some airport locations and the Biltmore Hotel. There's also some restored location footage of Hollywood Blvd. and Sunset and Vine as well as an aerial over Hollywood. ______________ As I was about to post this I came across an L.A. Weekly article titled: Your Ultimate Guide to L.A. Locations in Warren Beatty's Rules Don't Apply It has some further details of what I mentioned above as well as info about some other locations like Griffith Park, a house in the Hollywood Hills, some churches, the airport locations and Long Beach Harbor. Also, some locations that got away. http://www.laweekly.com/arts/your-ul...-apply-7611160 Also on that page are links to these other related articles: --Your Complete Guide to the L.A. If you were reading this thread yesterday, the subject of today's Julius Shulman post won't be a surprise. It's "Job 2622: Case Study House No. 21 (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1958, 1959". There are 31 images in the set - 26 black & white and 5 color. I've had to take some tough decisions about which ones to leave out, but I've got it down to 12 images to give a flavor of what's available. You can always click the link at the bottom to see the rest. The address wasn't mentioned yesterday - it's 9038 Wonderland Park. Here's how it started out.
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original Still no floor, but the roof's coming along. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original We then jump to the finished house. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...3.jpg~original The shallow pools go around most of the house. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...4.jpg~original From this side it looks more like shipping containers than a $4.5 million house :). http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...5.jpg~original The patio is on the south side. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...6.jpg~original I've avoided the views of the entrance which we saw yesterday. Here's a wider shot. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...7.jpg~original The kitchen is behind the wall on the left of the picture above. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...8.jpg~original I'd feel rather exposed in the bedroom! http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...9.jpg~original Now the color shots. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...0.jpg~original The kitchen was cream with blue seats on the chairs. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original I'll finish with this photo. Like the bedroom, it doesn't look like there was much privacy in the bathroom. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original All from Getty Research Institute |
Oh, Good Lord, that house had one of those GE wall-hung refrigerators:
http://www.boebertandblossom.com/Downloads/Fridge.jpg We had one in our house in Minneapolis. No capacity, conked out all the time. No way to replace it without redoing the whole kitchen (which we eventually did.) First time it died my wife said to the repairman "I bet you don't see one of these very often." He replied, "Lady, the Betty Crocker kitchen has 22 of them. I see them all the time." The kids hated it because they had to drag a step stool into the kitchen to get milk. The cats, however, loved it: a heated shelf to lay on during the winter. Cheers, Earl |

Paul Kalmanovitz (1905–1987) He was mostly hated by his employees. We've seen a couple of Julius Shulman photosets of Gibraltar Savings branches before. This one is "Job 4104: Maxwell Starkman Associates, Gibraltar Savings (Fullerton, Calif.), 1966".
http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...1.jpg~original Here's a different angle on the corner. http://i809.photobucket.com/albums/z...2.jpg~original Note the model of the building on the desk at the right.
