Windsor is the oldest known site of continuous European settlement in Ontario. French agricultural settlements in the area were established in 1748 and the first significant migration of English speaking people was in 1797. The arrival of the Ford Motor Company in 1904 sparked rapid growth and to this day, the automotive industry remains the most important sector of Windsor’s economy with DaimlerChrysler being the city’s largest employer. Officially known as the City of Roses, Windsor’s 25 km of waterfront along the Detroit River is lined with parks, gardens, trails, sculptures and mansions. |
