Located adjacent to Kitchener, Waterloo is home to two universities and also home to RIM and other high-tech University of Waterloo spin-off companies. Other leading employers in the city include major national finiancial planning and insurance institutions. Former major employers of Waterloo included a Labatt brewery and Seagram distillery in the "Uptown" core, portions of the latter are now high-end loft condominiums. Much of the downtown architecture was built when Labatt, Seagram, and the Canadian Barrel Company were in operation. |
