Waterloo is home to two universities and a number of high-tech companies. Other leading employers in the city include major national financial
planning and insurance institutions. Former major employers were a Labatt brewery and a Seagram distillery in the "Uptown" core, portions of
the latter's old warehouse are now high-end loft condominiums. Much of the downtown architecture was built when Labatt, Seagram, and the Canadian
Barrel Company were in operation.
