THUNDER BAY, Ontario
Thunder Bay or "The Lakehead" is the amalgamation of Port Arthur and Fort William. The cities joined on January 1st 1970 forming two distinct city cores. The build up of commerce in the Intercity area, located between the two cores, is slowly but surely taking its toll on their popularity. The city of Fort William actually began in 1803 where the Northwest Co. set up a fur trading fort in what is now the East End of the city. This fort has been replicated and is now Old Fort William Historical Park and is a great tourist draw. The city was mainly a forestry and shipping centre but now relies more on technology and science as it's major industry. Thunder Bay is home to Confederation College and Lakehead University which is linked to the Lakehead Regional Health Sciences Centre.
