PETERBOROUGH, Ontario

Peterborough is traditionally a manufacturing centre that has diversified into education, tourism, and health sciences. Originally settled in 1818, Peterborough merged with the Village of Ashburnham in 1904 and became a city the next year. Today Peterborough has one of the more vibrant downtowns in Ontario, with retail, theatre, art galleries and bars. Ashburnham is now known as East City and still has a distict main street; it's also home to the world's highest hydraulic lift lock. Trent University, with its striking brutalist architecture, is included in the Downtown gallery.
