Pembroke, along with nearby Petawawa, anchors the upper Ottawa Valley. Agriculture,
tourism, and lumber are important industries, and Chalk River Laboratories and CFB Petawawa are nearby. Still, downtown
struggles to find a niche; the streets are quiet and low rent businesses are common. There's some excellent historic
architecture though, including City Hall, the Ottawa River Power building, and the Munro Block. The mid-20th century post office features
hundreds of maple leaves in its facade.
