PEMBROKE, Ontario
Pembroke, along with nearby Petawawa, anchors the upper Ottawa Valley. Agriculture, tourism, and lumber are important industries, and Chalk River Laboratories and CFB Petawawa are nearby. Still, downtown struggles to find a niche; the streets are quiet and low rent businesses are common. There's some excellent historic architecture though, including City Hall, the Ottawa River Power building, and the Munro Block. The mid-20th century post office features hundreds of maple leaves in its facade.
