NANTICOKE, Ontario
Probably best known for its coal fired power plant (the largest of its kind in North America), Nanticoke boasts more industry than residents and commercial businesses. In addition to the power plant, the two major emplyers are Imperial Oil and the Lake Erie Steel Company. Optimistic outlooks for the village along with the master planned city of Townsend were experienced when the power plant was constructed in the 1970s. The associated influx of industry was predicted to rival that of nearby Hamilton. It was this optimism that led to the designation as a city (until its recent dissolution into Haldimand County) despite the low population. Nanticoke boasts major street names such as Queen Street and John Street but each are only 80 metres in length. These are signs of an unbuilt metropolis.
