MISSISSAUGA, Ontario | |

Recognized as the largest suburb of Toronto, Mississauga is a mess of cul-de-sacs and dead
worm roadways. Now a completely auto-dependent wasteland, the city is
struggling to reinvent itself after decades of sprawl. High-density condominium developments are springing up
in the City Centre and plans are in place for a
potential light-rail transit system along one of the main arterials. But much work needs to be done to give the city a soul.
Mississauga has three historic core
areas which over time became amalgamated and the gaps between them filled in with cookie-cutter subdivisions: Port Credit, Streetsville and
Meadowvale Village.
Mississauga City Centre was an artificial creation by a developer which basically forced the city to develop around a large regional mall. When City Hall was
moved to the area, it became evident that the area would play a key role in the development of the city. It's worth noting that particular care has been taken in
protecting Meadowvale
Village. The village is a fascinating and unique area surrounded by suburban housing but yet is difficult to access and thereby protected
from the busy streets. When visiting, one feels as if they were
in a rural hamlet rather than a city of nearly 700,000 inhabitants. Scroll down for galleries. | |
