MATTAWA, Ontario
Mattawa has a beautiful setting at the confluence of the Ottawa and Mattawa Rivers. The town was a crossroads for explorers like Samuel de Champlain, Étienne Brűlé, Jean Nicolet, and many others. In the 1800s Mattawa grew into a lumber centre. This history is celebrated with wooden statues throughout the town, the biggest of which is a 17 foot statue of local folk hero Big Joe Mufferaw.
