FALCONBRIDGE, Ontario |
|
|
Falconbridge began as a lumber camp but upon discovery of ore (nickle, copper) by Thomas Edison, mining became the primary industry of the town. Today, a large mining facility continues to operate and the smelter stacks dominate the town. Canadian Forces Station (CFS) Falconbridge was created as part of the famed Pinetree Line of radar stations to detect incoming Soviet bombers during the Col War. As technology advanced and the threat of bombers delivering nuclear weapons faded, the station became obsolete and was shut down in the mid 1980s. Many of the original buildings still remain though they are unused. |
