DEEP RIVER, Ontario
Deep River was planned in 1944 to support nearby Chalk River Laboratories, then part of the Manhattan Project. Since World War II the facility has been used for peaceful nuclear research and is still the heart of Deep River's economy. The town is typical of modernist planned communities, with a spread out, suburban street pattern and a focus on nature and recreation. The main street is lined with shops along the sidewalk, but thanks to the mostly one-storey buildings it lacks a true downtown feel.
