BRANTFORD, Ontario
Brantford was named after Joseph Brant, a Mohawk Chief who led the Six Nations people from upper New York state to the land that Brantford now occupies along the Grand River. The city has experienced a decline in its downtown core in recent decades and in response to this, a downtown revitalization program was established in 2002. Signs of hope have appeared with the creation of the Brantford campus of Wilfrid Laurier University. Some of the abandoned buildings have been renovated for the university. There are also signs of redevelopment of a large area of land in the heart of downtown for a new civic square.
