Almonte is a beautiful town located on a series of rapids in the Mississippi River. In the 1860s woolen mills were built in the town,
and many of the old mill buildings remain. Parks, walkways and patios have sprung up along the river more recently.
Never far from the river, Mill Street is lined with shops and some nicely maintained stone buildings. The standout is the Romanesque post office.
