Home Depot's solid reinforced masonry is far more substantial than the Ballroom's primarily wood construction.
Here's how the neighborhood changed when the Hollywood Freeway cut through the area. First, a view from 1948. I'm not sure what businesses were in either of the marked buildings in 1948 - I've included the outlines for consistency with my later aerial images.

Historic Aerials

I found this March 1953 picture on LAPL. It shows the new Hollywood Freeway looking south, and includes the northwest corner of the block we're discussing at the far left. I wish the picture extended a little further left so we could see the Rollerbowl/Stardust building.

LAPL

This 1972 image shows how the Hollywood Freeway changed a square block into a triangle. It looks like the area to the left of the Rollerbowl building was completely cleared, although some of residences on De Longre Avenue survive.

Historic Aerials

I've skipped forward to 2004 to show how the Home Depot building shares none of its footprint with the old Rollerbowl/Stardust building. By comparing the images on Historic Aerials with the historical images on Google Earth, it appears that the Rollerbowl/Stardust building was demolished between 1980 and 1989. The Home Depot building was built sometime between 1994 and 2002.

Very interesting aerials HossC.

A dummy had crossed my mind as well loyalton. She/it appears rather stiff hanging from that fire escape.

It would be fun to watch the film and sort it all out, but the damn thing is lost.

The Royal Palms Apts. 1419 S. Wilton Place.*

http://photos.lapl.org/carlweb/jsp/F...olNumber=30521

I found this at 1419 S. Wilton Place, so I was pretty bummed.

GSV

..but as I turned the google-mobile around I noticed an apartment building down the street.

GSV

Sure enough....it was the Royal Palms.

GSV

This Royal Palms not to be confused with the old Royal Palms Hotel on Westlake.
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=19289

and the Westlake Royal Palms was originally the Concordia Club, an exclusive Jewish club.

* I went back and double checked the library archive, the address is now listed as 1518 South Wilton Place.
(I swear it said 1419 when I saved it to my file)

Next to the for rent sign, an Oz survivor? A Culver City transplant? Or just a sapling with an attitude?

Kind of off-topic, but how do you get the Historic Aerials pictures to not have a watermark? Does it require some kind of paid subscription?

Removing watermarks is one of HossC's many talents.
The vintage b/w aerials are 100% better with out the obtrusive diagonal watermarks.

So is that fine looking building the Hotel Decatur, or is the Hotel Decatur out of view on the right? (with only the sign visible)
Now that I've looked at the photo a little longer, I can see a diagonal guy-wire tethered to the Hotel Decatur sign. -so I guess it's on the right.

ebay

I wasn't sure why there was a giant horseshoe on the building

until I found this.

New courthouse, not to be mistaken for any county other than LA? Could lone mail box handle all court mail?

A bit of trivia relating to the light green and black automobiles seen in the lower right foreground. The light green car is a 1950 Pontiac Streamliner 2-door and was my first car. I am not as up on my Chevys of the period but the black car is a Chevy. Both makes shared nearly identical styling from 1949 to 1952. the beauty of this shot is that the view shows the two key identifying features of both. Chevys had a slightly shorter front end and a flat section at the top of the front wheel well opening, whereas the Pontiacs had a longer front end and a symmetrical arch to the wheel well.

This nonsense should aid in differentiating the two marks in other street scenes posted on NLA. No need to thank me. Wasting time and creating boredom is my reward. . .

Cheers,
Jack

My first car was also a '50 Pontiac although in my case a Catalina two-door hard top. Bought it from the widow Wilson who didn't drive and had left it in the side driveway of her house for several years following her husband's passing. Paid thirty-five dollars for it, bought four used tires and a brand new battery at the Richfield station and I was good to go. Got a lot of service out of that car.

1950 Pontiac Chief hood ornament

My hood ornament looked like this...sorta.

Well Bruce, after 6490 of your posts, I eventually wondered where you got your avatar. I don't recognize you behind the green apple. What can you tell us about it ? It has become a noirish and cryptic landmark to most of us.

Those are some great looking service stations Tourmaline.

I came across this rather bleak looking slide earlier today on ebay.

ebay

I'm curious about the white building on the right. Does anyone know what building that is?
Notice how the railroad tracks come within a few feet of it's front door.

Here's a detail

The "105 N" sign is correct. Mooney's Seiberling Service Station was at 105 North Oxnard Boulevard, Oxnard (the clue was the building on the right). It now sells Arco fuel under the name Lashkari's Service Station.
