Some color pics of New York (and also New Orleans) in 1962 (taken by my grandparents)

A few weeks ago, my grandmother brought to me a hidden treasure : dozens and dozens of color slides from the 1950's and 1960's. Among them, there were some pics of their trip to the USA in 1962.
My grandparents used to travel a lot in their youth (which was still quite uncommon at that time). They travelled to Kenya, India, Madagascar, Mexico... and also to New York and New Orleans.

So here are the few pics they took during their american trip :

Pictures number two and three in the thread are also downtown New Orleans rather than anywhere in NYC. #3 is on St. Charles Ave. just above Canal St, and#2 is (I think) Barrone St. looking uptown at Canal St. This was New Orleans as it appeared when I first went there to attend college.

OMG, the top of the Empire State Building looks so clean and not cluttered with shit!

All in all NY looks kinda horrible back then, thank god I was born nowhere near the 60's.

Thanks for these pics!

The Empire State Building had been completed only 31 years in 1962. No wonder it has sort of a newer look in the photos. My first trip to NYC was in 1966 when I was a kid. I remember how dark and dingy so many buildings looked. When I returned in 1989, I could tell that many buildings had been cleaned and looked a lot better. The streets were cleaner as well, as were the subways. I'm way overdue for another visit.
