Ha! “Go” was a pretty good movie, which few people have seen.

Kevin and Bean on KROQ was where I first learned of the area codes as status symbols phenomena. My roommate bought one of their Christmas albums, ("Christmas Time in the 909").

One of the novelty songs referred to the Inland Empire as the "Valley of the Dirt People" which just confused and confounded the ever-loving hell out of me.

Rochester still only has 585

289 became an area code in southern Ontario about 2 decades ago but I didn't know anyone personally that had the area code until 10 years ago.

I've kept it ever since and I will never let it go.
I kept changing numbers for a while back then. Old timers are well aware that the included call minutes were limited each month (and all texts cost money). So each year, the phone companies offered more minutes under new phone contracts. But the downside was that you needed to switch phone numbers each time for whatever reason. ()

I think Cingular (now AT&T) finally came out with their "keep your number" perk even if you signed a new phone contract to get more monthly minutes. Pretty soon, all the phone companies were doing the same. So we no longer needed to do the yearly "here's my new number" dance with your contacts.
