As far as I can tell, Noel Thorpe was actually appointed the new assistant head coach for Montreal? He will also continue his role as their defensive coordinator, having signed a two-year contract extension.

Meanwhile, the Ottawa RedBlacks are reported to have hired Rick Campbell (formerly the Stampeders' defensive coordinator) as their head coach. The official announcement will be made tomorrow.

Is it just me or is it your first instinct too to call the Red Blacks the Rough Riders when talking about them.

When is the Redblacks draft? I'm curious how much of Calgary they take (already took our Defensive Coordinator as the head coach), I'm figuring one of our QB's (Tate likely) will be gone.

Does anyone have a well-informed idea how much extra revenue TSN might generate per season if a tenth franchise was added to Atlantic Canada, creating a 10-team league that stretched across the country from coast to coast, attracting potentially hundreds of thousands of new East Coast viewers and increasing the number of weekly broadcasts from four to five?

Not informed but 10 teams would be sweet. 5 games every weekend. 2 Friday, 2 Saturday and 1 Sunday

So for 18 games

If you were the Roughriders you would play each western team 3 times, each eastern team 1 time and either an eastern team would get an extra game or you would play a west team 4 times.

I asked because I wonder (in light of Roger's NHL deal, which shuts TSN out for 12 years) whether it would make sense for Bell Media to spearhead the swift creation of a tenth team and new stadium in Halifax in order to maximize the value of their most valuable property.

Maybe a push at the McCains or Irvings to get involved?

Average CFL game on TSN draws 700,000 viewers or so labour day games and big Rider games crack the 1 million viewers mark playoffs draw 1.5 to 2 million and obviously Grey Cup is the 4.5 to 5.5 million mark. For comparison the average eastern game on Saturday nights on HNIC draws 1.7 million and the late night western game is usually between 850,000 and 950,000 viewers. CFL is the dominant #2 sports property in Canada with the Blue Jays #3 usually drawing between 350,000-450,000 viewers. With Ottawa joining this year that might add 100,000 more viewers from the Capital region. An Atlantic team maybe 150,000 to 200,000 more viewers from the Maritimes.

Why not just play every team home & away?

Then why have two divisions?

Divisions would be for playoffs (East vs West).
Personally, as a season ticket holder, I would rather see every team in the league every year rather than the divisional teams twice or more.
I suspect I'm likely in the minority on that however.

No I agree, with 10 teams home and away would be perfect.

It makes the argument for a single division stronger...

Definitely. If the CFL ever gets to 12 teams I'd love for divisions to come back, either having 2 divisions with the top 2 teams and 2 wild cards, or 3 divisions with the winner of each division and 3 wild cards making the playoffs. The way our cities our laid out 3 divisions would be tough though as it would likely screw Winnipeg over.

But anyway, I don't think we should have division when we get to 10. They're pretty arbitrary, and it would be awesome to see the actual two best teams make it to the Grey Cup.

I would love to see 10 teams, each team playing a home game and away game with each other.

Keep the playoffs exactly the same (i.e. the top 3 teams from the East and the West make it, with the top team getting a bye). The other 4 teams miss out.

That would be perfect.

I get the reasoning behind eliminating the divisions, I really do. Ideally the two best teams should face off for the Grey Cup. It might just force the East division teams to wake up, too - the disparity has been too big for too long.

But east vs. west is just so... Canadian.

But it would just seem silly to have everyone play home and away but still rank them by divisions.

Maybe, or uniquely CFL.
We have some time to think about it though.
