^ My bike commute takes me right past there now, gotta stop for a more recent photo soon (it's hard to stop when I like to keep moving). There's definitely some rail being placed now. Forms at the bottom south of Grierson are for the elevator.

They are pumping concrete right now into the forms at the top of the hill.

Edmonton mayor makes push for river valley park similar to Vancouver's popular seawall
http://www.edmontonsun.com/2016/08/1...opular-seawall

Quote:
Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson proposed a new urban park Wednesday along the North Saskatchewan River, likening it to Vancouver's popular seawall.

It would feature an expanded walking and biking area between Groat Road and the Walterdale Bridge, with small parks, benches and places to get down to the water. This would build on the Touch the Water project below the Hotel Macdonald, which features wide, park-like stairs and benches alongside a funicular. It is scheduled to open in the fall of 2017.

"When people see that, they're going to say: 'This is fantastic. I want to see more of this,' " said Iveson, after a meeting to discuss River Valley Alliance capital projects for 2017 through 2022. "I want to get ahead of that and get a preliminary sense of what would be involved in extending that kind of experience."

The River Valley Alliance is using matching funds from federal and provincial governments to connect riverside pathways right through the capital region. They envision having enhanced facilities like Iveson proposes in heavily used areas during future phases.

But Iveson said his proposed project is needed now. "We have so many people running and biking and walking their dogs, whatever, along River Valley Road right now that it's actually getting quite congested."
I'm all for this, though if he's using Vancouver comparables I'd like to see a Coal Harbor promenade in Lower Rossdale.

Meh. Iveson has no idea how the seawall was built. That is, it took decades to build. I guess it's okay to be visionary.

A good idea - but maybe the s̶e̶a̶w̶a̶l̶l̶ riverwall should be built first and plan for the rise in water level with the weir. Cheaper to construct that way.

I'd rather get the top of bank done between the Quarters and 105st.
Then do this in Rossdale.
I don't get why we need this along River Valley road, it's very nice there already.

Having spent years in that city, I'd say this is also a relevant link:

https://www.saskatoon.ca/sites/defau...y_brochure.pdf

I'd hate to be adrift near that weir.

Because people can't get close to it...they want to be able to touch it, hear the wave action slosh against the shore, the closer to water we are the better imo.

The weir needs to be built first so we can plan and build the rest knowing what the water level will be.

It's probably been mentioned before, but Brisbane does a wonderful job getting people to interact with their river and surrounding area.

Water taxis, river boardwalks, restaurants, beaches and cafes really make it accessible.

Park'n'ride Water taxi between Windermere - Downtown - Rundle or even further North?? That would be an awesome alternative to get around.

People need to realize that Edmonton's river valley is just that...a valley...making a lot of the ideas that get thrown around unrealistic.
