That side of the building always reminds me of a handful of confetti floating down through the air.

It really is a beautiful building, and the completion of the cladding to the top brings that home. The only regret is that it will be sandwiched between two taller buildings.

Another screen grab from that video shows the prominence it now has...

Good point. Being sandwiched between those two buildings means it will be hard to see it from the sides and the river/Jersey.

I've figured it out! This building isn't designed to look like a waterfall; it's designed to look like a giant submarine's periscope rising up out of the ocean.

Well, it will only be blocked if you're looking at it from that direct vantage point, across from 57th Street. But it will be diminished as more of a background tower with two taller towers on either side. It won't be the focal point that it is now.

Reminds me of a pipe organ.

Nice pics, ILNY.

I'm confused by the dark panels on the side of the crown. I wonder if they are only temporary or permanent? In that close up it almost appears as if they are some sort of protective coating that will be behind the actual glazing. I guess we'll find out.

The crown looks great though!

It pains me to say this but I don't think this tower translated well enough from rendering to reality...It looks awkward IMO like it wants to be two different things. Even the crown doesn't seem to fit well enough with the tower as a whole...I've reserved my judgement until he tower gained its crown but now I just feel like it doesn't come full circle. It all just seems very Sketchup like...as though the architect was fishing to try to create a design with a modern flow but just couldn't get the shapes right...Idk its welcome here but I just feel like that site could have done better.

Agree but I do wish the front face of the crown went straight up and didn't taper like it does however. that's my only complaint

Yeah it's dope. I wish they'd used it as a motif on the base or elsewhere on the building.

Ha!

I originally gave this design a 7 or 8, and now that it's nearing completion I'll go with the 8. As SkyscrapersOfNewYork said, (to paraphrase) it looks like it has two halves: the periscope side and the waterfall side. The waterfall side doesn't quite look like a waterfall... the flow could easily be much better. Plus, if the waterfall were facing the park it would be so much more visible and dramatic. But it's facing 57th street and it's hard to see it unless you're right under it. Still, it's a nice addition to the skyline, and I'll take it.

I decided to withhold my opinion on this tower til it was complete - but I can stand it anymore... I think this design is over-the-top fussy and tries too hard to be... I don't know what. To my eye, this building would be look more at home in Miami or Vegas..not across the street from Carnegie Hall.

There is just too much going on... It reminds of a '70s shower curtain. To use a Yiddish word... it is UNGAPATCHKA

Bring on more supertowers! It will still be visible from its best side, Central Park.

Ungapatchka definition from Urban Dictionary.
- a Yiddish word that describes the overly ornate, busy, ridiculously over-decorated, and garnished to the point of distaste
-Yiddish noun or adjective, denoting excessive ornamentation or kitsch.

I do not think either of above definitions apply to this tower.

One57 is original, well design, futuristic building that stands out and brings variety to midtown skyline. I like it.

I don't really like this building anymore. At first it's design and plans looked good but the crown uses a different colored glass from the entire structure. This makes it look ugly, awkward, and weird. It isn't working out. I would like to hold out my judgement a bit farther but it doesn't look like it will change much..........
