It just dawned upon me that in many ways it is similar to Comcast going up in Philly, especially with its large opening on top of the north side.

CITI TOWER CALLED RIPE FOR SOLAR

By CHUCK BENNETT
May 8, 2007

The iconic 45-degree slant of the CitiCorp Center's roof was originally intended for Earth-friendly solar panels. Thirty years ago, however, the technology wasn't ready.

Now, advocates are beaming at the chance to harness the sun's rays atop one of Manhattan's most recognizable towers.

"It is, without a doubt, a feasible project, especially since the building is designed for it," Bob Reedy, director of the Florida Solar Energy Center, told The Post.

But building owner Boston Properties, headed by Daily News boss Mort Zuckerman, isn't sunny on solar.

Definitely my #1 favorite modern building in Manhattan. It's cool how it is an otherwise ordinary office tower, yet it still stands out in the skyline because of the slanted roof. Oh, and its 900+ ft. height helps out too.

Question: Has anyone else ever seen the Citigroup Center lit up in Red???

I saw it happen on two occassions within the past year. Often, it is given a standard flood light treatment from adjacent buildings, similar to the Rockefeller Center.

Does that sloping roof serve any practical purpose or is that just a design only?

I actually work in Citigroup, and as far as I can tell, it's purely an element of the design. If it has some practical purpose, the secret has been well kept.

^ It is indeed the Seagram Building. The Citigroup Center is a nice building, but the Seagram Building is perhaps my favorite building in NYC.

Ludwig Mies Van de Rohe did not skimp on the design and construction of that building, and you can see it in its exterior. A true thing of beauty. No wonder he hated Philip Johnson's Glass House so much.

philip johnson designed the restaurant in the seagram tower. anyway, the citicorp center was one of the buildings that sparked my interest in skyscraper in the mid 80's.

^I'm aware that Johnson collaborated with Van de Rohe in designing the Seagram Building. However, the main ideas and execution as far as I know were Van de Rohe's.

Anyway, back on topic. I always found the stilts on the Citigroup Building to be fascinating. Until I actually saw the building up close, I had no idea it was built that way. I had no problems with its stability when I first saw it and I have no problems now. Of course, had I been around back when it was first built and was still bolted together, I would have been a bit queasy knowing that a stiff breeze would knock it down.

This is one of my all time fav buildings, actually seeing this building in a book was one of my first memories. I love how they build the design around the church at the bottom and I love the story of how they had to refit the building to withstand hurricane strength winds.
