It's called la Grande Arche (de la Défense).

I am somewhat shocked, yet gratified to see these comments. While it has always been one of my favorites, Tour Montparnasse is the classic example of the building everyone loves to hate.

^I dunno... its much more refined than, say, the PanAm building, and I especially like the curving lowrise portion and gardens behind the tower.

You all realize that this was redeveloped from a train station right? the whole rear portion of the complex is built on a platform over the tracks.

what it replaced- I'm sure you all know this picture:

Most Parisians hate this building. (My sister lives in Paris.) The reason the view is the beat in Paris is that it is the only place in the city that you don't have to look at the Tour Montparnasse. I had dinner at the restaurant on top of the tour twenty years ago. It was overpriced and undercooked.

When I came sometimes to Paris I really appreciated the Tour Montparnasse and The Arc La Defense area. Both is too Paris to me like Tour Eiffel. All 3 are the Paris symbol as the others including the glass piramide at Louvre, Triumph Arc, Notre Dame Cathedral and Terminal F from airport, the structures I most like in Paris. The old fashioned lowrises bldgs have the interesting part, but for Parisiens maybe are better, not for me with an international point of view.

I forgot to say the Pompidou Centre is also quite interesting symbol of Paris also, but looks like as factory in museum, it is strange, but OK. BTW Fabb, very beautiful photos on Summer time.

I know someone who lives in it.
The other buildings in the complex contain offices, not that one.

This building is famous because of its enduring spirit of 1968. It was even documented in "Le Monde".

Come on, Tour Montparnasse looks fine.
Look at the midrise crap near it.
Think about all the other shit out of that era.

Then look at Tour Montparnasse again.
Goodlookin', eh?

I liked the other set you had on Lafayette Haussman, as well.
You are indeed good for French Tourism, as I am feeling a certain "need" to get back over there soon...very soon!!

Merci!

I've seen Tour Montparnasse in pictures and in person but i have never seen it look better than this picture, which makes it look like one of the world's tallest buildings:

It's always kind of reminded me of the building from "The Towering Inferno". Hopefully it won't suffer the same fate as that building.

I'm going to Paris this weekend!

Is there public access to the top of the tower, other than the restaurant?

^^ You can visit the panorama terrace, which is located on the roof of the building. The view is great.

Haha... well, I suppose I could have just googled it! But thank you.

Looking at the site does leave me with another question: will they allow me to bring a tripod? I'd like to go in the evening, but it will be hard to take pictures in low light without a tripod.

Various building observatories I've visited in the past, such as the Empire State Building and John Hancock Center don't allow tripods...
