KUWAIT CITY, Feb 21: Dr Fadhel Al-Safar announced that the Ministry of Public Works is directing all its efforts to stabilize and reduce the traffic pressure in Kuwait City, and that is through constructing a new ministerial compound, west of Al-Shedadeiah, in order to resolve the huge daily flow of revisers inside the city to complete projects and paper work, during ‘The Kuwait Forum for Municipal Dialogue’, for regenerating Kuwait City, held at the Marina Hotel on Feb 21, 2010.

- During the conference which was titled ‘A Perspective for City development’ Al Safar explained Kuwait’s current status on city development. “We are still far away from complying with high standards of city development; however we have made certain developments with the sophisticated and advanced building structures. These buildings comply with international standards in terms of energy saving technicalities which depend on using natural energy such as solar energy,” he stated. He also added that the areas which need to comply with international standards for city structure are Dasman, Al-Mergab, Sharq and Jeblah and to beautify parts of the City, including the need to build a road network that can absorb all the changes that need to be done. “We also need to present major studies and to focus on population congestion in Kuwait in the areas already stated.” The Dialogue was being organised by Kuwait Municipality and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme as part of the process of developing the Rapid Urban Sector Profile for Sustainability (RUSPS) for the Capital of Kuwait.

- The Rapid Urban Sector Profiling for Sustainability (RUSPS) is an accelerated action-oriented assessment of the urban needs and capacity building gaps at the city level. It is currently implemented in 39 countries in Africa, and Arab states, and achieved collaboration with many UN departments; the Urban Environment Section, the Global Urban Observatory, the Shelter Branch, the Urban Governance Unit, the General Policy Unit and the Training and Capacity Building Approach. The RUSPS approach addresses identified themes using structured approach where priority interventions are agreed upon through consultative process with various government bodies and stakeholders. The RUSPS provides an overview of the urban situation in each participating city through a series of interviews with key urban actors and city consultation where priorities agreed. The purpose of the Urban Sector Profile for Sustainability for is to contribute to growth and urban development at local and national levels in Kuwait. UN HABITAT has started RUSPS for Kuwait City through an assessment of needs as a contribution to the implementation of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
