Mount Allison architecture focus of new book: A Vision in Wood & Stone
Mount A campus 'one of the best' collections of contemporary and 20th century architecture in Maritimes
By Vanessa Blanch, CBC News Posted: May 14, 2016 9:00 AM AT

Photographer and fine arts professor Thaddeus Holownia contributed about 50 photographs to the new book, including this one of Marjorie Young Bell Convocation Hall. (Thaddeus Holownia)

A new book by architect John Leroux and Mount Allison fine arts professor Thaddeus Holownia entitled, A Vision of Wood and Stone – The Architecture of Mount Allison University, chronicles the story of the Sackville campus.

Leroux says he has long-admired the rich architecture of Mount Allison and wanted to work with Holownia on the project for a long time.

"We realized there was really nothing on its physical presence. There was nothing on its architecture and it's one of the most beautiful campuses in Canada,"

And no, I have no idea why that car is sporting a European plate.......
All the vehicles are pre-rendered I do believe it looks like the red one at the pump is a right hand drive. Someone should have done a few changes to the models before adding them in... LOL

Hmmm this is always a good Idea. I've lways loved old architecture but if it's not maintained it does not last so books are always the next best thing in my opinion.

There are apparently plans afoot to add a Robin's Donut drive thru to the Ultramar gas station on Cattail Ridge Road (the 2nd TCH exit in town).

New commercial/apartment building on Main Street where Sackville United Church used to be.

As expected, it is mostly a clone of the building in behind, with the major difference being brick cladding, presumably so that it fits in with the Main Street theme.

Also:

- there are several new restaurants on Bridge Street, with about four new sidewalk patios now open along the street. This gives the main drag quite a different ambiance than it had before.
- they are well along in constructing the new permanent bleachers at Alumni Field at MTA. They will be quite nice to have once football season starts again this fall.

I guess this isn't happening now. Being a progressive college town, there is a concern over idling vehicles and there is a moratorium on new drive-thru's in the community. Town council put the kibosh on this.

It is understandable, but sucks at the same time.
I understand there concerns about Idling cars but is this any different then Idling cars at any red lights/stop sign. To me it seems a little for them to state that they fear the idling cars.

That's not really a rational concern. Idling a vehicle is a waste of fuel and pollutes, but it's such a trivial amount.

Too silly. One exit down from her business is a McD drive thru, a Tim's drive thru, two restaurants, two gas stations, a grocery store, liquor store......... It would be funny if it wasn't so ridiculous. I hope she appeals.

Checked in the T&T today, and one title caught my eye Sackville upholds ban on drive-trus

It just state that there decision to ban a drive-tru window at the gas station is because the town has had a ban for 15 years.

My question is why not uphold the ban for all businesses if this is truly the case?

Instead when they passed the law to ban drive-trus in the town they grandfathered the businesses drive-tru that already existed.

Edit: I think Sackville might want to rethink there ban. But that is just my opinion.

There has been some further progress on the new building where Sackville United Church used to be, but there is still a way to go.

Apparently the Sackville Service NB location has moved into this new downtown building.

This will be a much more central location for them, and good for other businesses in the downtown core.

This recently installed sculpture is the finishing touch for the Bridge Street reconstruction project:

Mount Allison University receives millions in new infrastructure funding for academic, athletics projects

SACKVILLE, NB — Mount Allison University will be home to a world-class research facility for environmental science as well as improved athletics resources with a multi-million dollar announcement in new funding through the Strategic Investment Fund (SIF) Program and the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.

The investments announced today will help establish the Centre for Environmental Innovation at Mount Allison as well as assist with enhancements to the Alumni Field facilities on campus.

The funding through the SIF program will establish an environmental innovation and research facility at Mount Allison, bringing 15 scientists whose work focuses on environmental and life sciences together in one central location. Of the $13-million investment, $6.5 million will come from the federal government and $3.25 million from the Province of New Brunswick. Mount Allison University will contribute an additional $3.25 million.

The Centre for Environmental Innovation will be housed in the existing Gairdner Building, located at the heart of Mount Allison’s campus. The renovated facility will allow for increased research collaboration and facilitate the study of the effects of changing climate and pollutants on marine and freshwater eco-systems.

Along with the new Centre, Mount Allison’s Barclay Building, housing the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, will also see upgrades to its labs and infrastructure, improving facilities and building efficiencies.

This announcement comes hot on the heels of major funding announcements for UdeM/ACRI in Moncton and UNB in Fredericton. It looks like all the major universities in the province have now been looked after.......

There must be a Burger King coming to Sackville as there is a job posting for an Assistant Manager on indeed.com.

I betcha that's going to go where the Wendy's used to be (the Wendy's/Timmies combo store by the TCH). The Wendy's closed not long after the merger between Tim Horton's and Burger King.

It would make sense that Burger King would go in there.

Mount Allison University receives gift of Colville Studio

SACKVILLE, N.B. – Mount Allison University is pleased to announce a major gift from the family of the late Canadian artist Alex Colville — the donation of the artist’s studio, to be permanently housed at Colville House on the University campus.

The gift of the artist’s studio, including his paints, brushes, easels, worktables, and other studio materials, rounds out an extraordinary and unique set of resources at Mount Allison University on the life, work, and legacy of one of Canada's best-known artists.

“Seen together, these resources explore the ideas and contribution of Alex Colville as an internationally-recognized artist,” says Gemey Kelly, director-curator of the Owens Art Gallery at Mount Allison University. “They also provide new opportunities for inquiry into the themes of place, home, and the human condition that absorbed Colville over a lifetime of art making.”

The gift was announced during the official opening of The Colville Gallery at the Owens Art Gallery on Sunday, Oct. 2. The studio will open on July 1, 2017.

“This is a unique and consequential gift,” says Mount Allison president Robert Campbell.

“Visitors, admirers of Colville’s work, and those who wish to make a study of it, will be able to come to Mount Allison, step into his studio, visit his home, view his pieces, and literally walk in his footsteps around the community.

This could serve as an important tourist attraction for the town. Between the Colville Gallery at the Owens Art Gallery and the reconstructed Colville Studio at Colville House, the fans of the artist will have a lot to look forward to in a visit to the university campus.
